The activities related to the preparation of the final examination for the achievement of the LM will be carried out by the student under the supervision of a tutor during the training period at a research laboratory University or a highly qualified body under an agreement with the University biomolecular .
The final exam, which involves the acquisition of 13 credits, consists of the discussion, in open session, of an exclusively experimental thesis and which brings an original contribution, prepared under the guidance of a teacher of the course with LM, as rapporteur. The dissertation may be written in Italian or English and must have the typical form of a complete scientific work in terms of general organization (Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, References, Tables and Figures). The decision of the Commission of Science will be formulated according to procedures defined in the Academic Regulations for the Course.
Skills required for access.
Students wishing to enroll in the Master of Science in Molecular and Cellular Biology must hold a Degree or another qualification obtained abroad and recognized as valid under current legislation.
For access to the Master of Science as well as proving the possession of curricular requirements corresponding to adequate number of credits in groups of scientific areas that will be defined in the academic regulations, and adequate preparation in both core subjects in the preparation biologist, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and computer science, which in basic biological disciplines that provide the essential knowledge about the organization of living beings morphological, functional and structural. They must also be in possession of knowledge about the biochemical mechanisms that regulate cellular and molecular heredity, reproduction and development. In particular, will have to document the previous acquisition of sufficient knowledge in the following disciplines of the Master of Science: Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cytology and Histology, General Microbiology, General Physiology, Genetics. The LM course in Molecular and Cellular Biology aims to supplement the basic knowledge, acquired through the Bachelor's degree in Biology, in some key areas of the biological sciences and to provide advanced preparation and operational framework at the level of biological phenomena cellular, sub-cellular and molecular. Specifically, the LM course aims to provide advanced training in areas related to biological disciplines, biochemical and molecular biology, with particular regard to the understanding of the cellular and molecular phenomena, and biological applications, biochemical and molecular biology in the fields of 'pharmaceutical, chemical and biotechnology industries, and service industries. The studies will also provide an in-depth knowledge and expertise in the use of instrumental methods, analytical tools and techniques for acquisition and data analysis.
The course of LM reflects the research activity carried out in the departments which heads the teachers of the course and will allow graduates to achieve preparation and skills according to the principles of European harmonization as specified at national level since CBUI for LM-6 class . In detail, the curriculum is organized to provide: - a thorough knowledge of chemistry concepts applied to biology from bioinorganic viewpoint and computational chemistry of proteins and biochemical mechanisms that regulate cellular metabolic activity of biocatalysis ; - A deepening and completion of knowledge related to molecular genetics, with reference to the functional genomics study through systems biology, the genetic variation at the molecular level, the molecular markers in the study of human populations; - A discussion of the basics of cytology and microscopic anatomy with detailed analysis of morphogenetic events and cell specialization at the microscopic and molecular level in the various periods of life; - A deepening of microbiology and virology with reference to the molecular mechanisms of replication strategies of pathogens and host-pathogen interactions; - A study of cell physiology concepts; - Adequate knowledge of the instrumental methodology, the most advanced technologies for the study of the molecular biology of the cell, the analytical tools and techniques for acquisition and data analysis; - Mastery of the scientific method to the study of biological phenomena, making the graduates are able to obtain and analyze experimental data independently, placing them in the treated scientific problems; - Communication skills for the exchange of information under the various aspects of the molecular biology of the cell and knowledge of English; - Critical ability to assess the prospects of the research work and using their scientific knowledge in related professional fields with biomolecular disciplines.
Teaching is divided into lectures and tutorials, seminars and laboratory activities that can be carried out completely or partially, also in English. In addition, a significant part of the commitment of the student teaching, distributed in the two-year course, is focused to the conduct of the internship and the final test which provides original research on topics of molecular biology of the cell, the basic scope or application. During the work of the graduate thesis he is part of a research group actively participating in the experimental work in a laboratory.
