Peabody's master of education program in English Language Learners is open to students who already possess a state teaching license or others who wish to pursue advanced study in the area of teaching linguistically diverse students in international settings. The program is designed to introduce students to the foundational and practical information to effectively serve populations who are learning English as a second language. The program consists of two strands, teaching English language learners in U.S. educational settings and teaching English in an international setting. TRANSLATE We test an instructional model (TRANSLATE) designed to improve the English reading comprehension of EL students in grades 2 and 3. In TRANSLATE, students learn to identify key textual excerpts and use cognitive, linguistic and social strategies to facilitate translation and comprehension. We work with four teachers and their EL students (32) in two elementary schools. Our goal is to establish proof of concept for the TRANSLATE approach and to identify any remaining problems teachers encounter during its implementation. [-]

Students in the program take courses in document design, technical editing, publication management, and language studies. All of these courses draw on both traditional and modern theories of rhetoric, and all offer hands-on experience—using cutting-edge software tools—in the creation and crafting of professional documents. Students are encouraged to explore a variety of approaches to the study of professional writing and editing. For some, the degree will be useful in gaining employment upon graduation; the degree also will make excellent preparation for the increasing number of Ph.D. programs in professional and technical communication. On this page are the requirements for the literature-based M.A.) The Master of Arts program in English offers courses in literature research, history, and theory, genre and figure studies, creative and professional writing, linguistics and composition theory, film, and the teaching of writing and literature. Faculty members strive to offer students an understanding of the traditions of literary study and familiarity with the latest multicultural and interdisciplinary approaches. The M.A. in English prepares graduates to pursue opportunities in teaching, professional writing, and further graduate study. Working closely with their advisors, students design individual programs to meet their interests and goals. Students are encouraged to explore a variety of approaches to the study of literature, language, and writing and to develop their abilities as readers, critics, writers, and teachers. The English M.A. program requires 30 semester hours of coursework in English, during which students complete and present a thesis, or a portfolio of their representative work, to a faculty review committee.
