A one-year Master's programme with 60 ECTS credits, Journalism Connected is a programme designed for newcomers to journalism. At the heart of Journalism Connected is the digital reporter, equipped for the globalizing world, who is capable of mastering interactive ICTs in story and content production. The Journalism Connected programme is designed for students with an undergraduate degree in the arts, sciences and/or other disciplines and with little or no previous journalism education or experience. It's for those who would like to adapt their competence in, for example, economics, politics, technology or design to journalism. You will acquire a knowledge of digital journalism and skills in reporting, media editing and production. The proliferation of multimedia technologies has made digital and interactive skills necessary for today's journalist to become successful in the profession. Contemporary and future journalists need practical digital knowledge which is different from traditional print or broadcast production, exploiting the distinctive features of new interactive media, such as the ability to design, link, archive, and produce content for multiple platforms, and integrate readers/users through social media. However, core journalism skills are still essential, so students will learn to research, gather, evaluate and analyze information and sources, and to write with accuracy, brevity, and clarity in an ethically informed way. The programme has a global focus on journalism as well as on society. Journalism Connected courses are designed with an entrepreneurial media business format, where students are exposed to the concept of newsroom production. The MA in Digital Media, Communication and Journalism accepts applicants from a variety of disciplines, namely Journalism, Communication, Advertising Marketing, Political, Social and Cultural Studies, Economics, Comparative, European and International Studies, History, Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, Archeology, History of Arts and Foreign Languages. 2. Applicants must hold a degree from a Greek or a foreign university or advanced technological educational institute, at a 2.1 level or equivalent grade (eg. B, very good, etc). Alternatively, they must be due to take their final examinations in the forthcoming June, at the latest. 3. Professional or research experience relevant to the pathway you have applied for, will be taken into consideration, particularly in the case of the pathways 2 & 3, that involve journalistic/ communication skills. English Language Requirements All teaching, course materials and coursework will be in English. Students whose native language is not English and/or whose principal language of university instruction was not English must provide evidence that they have sufficient command of both spoken and written English, which correspond at least to the level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) proficiency levels. Specifically, acceptable evidence includes: an overall score of at least 7 in the British Council IELTS test, or a score of at least 100 in the TOEFL iBT test, or 600 in the TOEFL PBT test, or a score of at least 76 in the PTE Academic test, or Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) with an overall score of at least 180 Students who wish to enhance their competence in the English language, or are advised by their tutors to do so, may take any or both of the following English Language Courses, which are also attended by our Erasmus students and are especially designed to improve their reading, writing and oral skills, as well as develop an increased level of vocabulary appropriate to the fields of communication and journalism studies, and enhance their capabilities in composing coherent essays and news articles/stories: IP 2300 Writing for the Print Media (Fall semester) IP 1600 Writing for the Broadcast Media (Spring Semester) In addition, all students are required to take the course on Dissertation Research and Writing Skills (MCC 401), which is designed to help them develop the research and writing skills necessary to produce high quality work in term-papers and their final dissertation. Graduate Curriculum A Master’s degree in Environmental Science and Natural Resource Journalism requires 36 credit hours: 18 in journalism and 12 in natural resource issues and/or environmental science. The school offers two options for the remaining six credits. Students can either use them to work on a documentary-style professional project or opt for creating a portfolio of work in multiple media. The professional project option allows students to embark on an ambitious investigation or create a comprehensive public information project. Students typically produce the project in their final semester at the university after completing the rest of the coursework. This allows them to travel outside Montana and abroad for research. They return to Montana to defend their project in front of their chosen faculty committee. The portfolio option allows students to take additional journalism electives and produce a three-part portfolio that explores a common environmental or natural resource theme. The portfolio must include work presented in at least two different mediums, ranging from writing to photography, video, audio, multimedia, maps and graphics. This track is designed for those wanting more experience with different journalistic mediums. Master's Work All students in the master’s program produce original, substantive works of journalism as part of their degree requirements. Their work is supervised and evaluated by a master’s committee, consisting of a chair and reviewer chosen from the School of Journalism faculty and a faculty member from another school or department. The graduate program director vets project, thesis or portfolio proposals before the student recruits a committee. In addition to their master’s stories, project and portfolio students produce a 1,000-word companion narrative that addresses context, story relevance, reporting and production process, sourcing, ethical considerations, media format choices and plans for publication. The master’s defense takes the form of a public presentation, where the candidate presents this narrative and shares some of her/his work. Committee members will attend this presentation and examine the candidate. In determining if the master’s work is fit for publication by a reputable news organization, they will consider accuracy, integrity, ethics, news value, depth, originality, language, style and effectiveness of technique.
