The Master in Musicolog:, Music, and Cultural Practice in Europe (MusEur) is a full-time, international, two-year program entirely taught in English and designed for students from all over the world. The master addresses European musical culture, from its creations and compositional techniques to the discourse surrounding music that has developed over the centuries and present-day management of musical heritage. The two-year program aims to provide the methodological fundamentals, the analytical skills and the cultural background for higher level musicological research and, more generally, to allow students to competently participate in current discussions of music. In the academic panorama, musical knowledge appears nowadays to be complex and multifaceted: it includes musical texts and theories, art and popular music, compositional tools and conceptions of performance, the impact of media on musical experience, and the functions of music in different social contexts. The Master prepares students for this composite and interdisciplinary knowledge, which is now a fundamental prerequisite for doctoral programs in Europe and America. The skills acquired also provide access to careers in high-level institutions dedicated to conserving and promoting musical resources, and professions that involve transmitting musical culture or conceiving and managing cultural events with musical content. The Department of musicology and cultural heritage, which hosts the program, is part of the University of Pavia, but it is located in Cremona, Claudio Monteverdi’s native city. In 2013 it ranked first for academic production among all Italian departments comparable for size and sector of research. It is made up of distinguished scholars who represent all fields of musicological research and have gained international recognition. A long history of exchanges involving both students and instructors has consolidated the Department’s position within today’s global academic debate. The teaching staff’s areas of specialisation range from historiography to music theory and philology, ethnomusicology and popular music studies, covering the entire chronological span from classical antiquity to the 21st century. Our wide and finely articulated didactic offer guarantees a complete and competitive training. Many ex-students of this Department have found positions in European and non-European universities, while others are employed by prestigious institutions dedicated to the conservation of musical heritage or concert activities, bearing clear witness to the wide scope of the education available at Cremona. Students of the program will be part of a dynamic intellectual community that encourages direct contact between professors and students and offers an extremely up-to-date library along with the most modern databases in the field of music. Examples of such production areas include industrial product design, interior architecture, communication, fashion, entertainment and urban planning. Particular attention will be paid to analyzing and summarizing utilization, control, ideation, organization and planning through the use of color. Consequently, color is not treated as a simple attribute of objects or surfaces, but as a means of expression and design underlying perception and interaction with reality. The Specializing Master consists of two phases. The theory and technique based phase aims to train students in the technical aspects of measurement, control, digital reproduction and comparison relating to disciplines such as physics, optics, colorimetry, chemistry, psychology and perception. The second phase focuses on the methods learned, which will be contextualized and experimented with in different color application and design areas such as interior design, urban spaces, industrial products, fashion and communication. Professional Outcomes The Specializing Master aims to produce an innovative professional figure, widely in demand by the market, with advanced technical and design skills concerning color use and control and color design in research and in several sectors such as interior design, urban planning, industrial product design, fashion design and communication. At the end of the course, students will be able to professionally manage multidisciplinary aspects relating to the study and management of color and will be able to work in a variety of firms and companies in the fields of interior design, urban planning, industrial products, fashion, communication, paints and dyes. Degree Awarded After completing the course and on passing the final exam, the 1st level Specializing Master "Color Design & Technology" certification will be issued.
