The programme takes in different types of conflict, from conventional trench warfare and geopolitical standoffs to guerrilla tactics and civil defence initiatives. It also considers the application of technology in warfare, the impact of the media on public opinion, along with the increasing importance of the ‘homefront’ in twentieth-century warfare. The core module provides a strong interpretative and conceptual backbone to the programme. Module options are rich and diverse, covering such areas as military-media relations, images of the British soldier, military theory, the impact of military conflict on cities, British war films and Nazi propaganda, the nuclear age, Native American culture and warfare, and detailed investigations in specific wars such as the Boer War, the Great War and the Vietnam War. The trilingual branch (French, English, German) of the Master in Advanced European and International Studies (MAEIS) is targeted at students who have completed their undergraduate studies. Its objective is to give students an overarching, encompassing vision of the political, social, economic, and cultural challenges of today’s world. The Master’s programme follows an original approach which distinguishes it from other Master’s courses in European Studies and International Relations: The MAEIS is an international, interdisciplinary and itinerant programme. Following the slogan “Learning and living Europe”, the participants rotate each trimester, moving their place of studies from Nice to Canterbury and then to Berlin. The programme is subdivided into three study terms followed by three months dedicated to the writing of the Master’s thesis and an internship (3 months minimum). Degree and recognition Students who successfully complete the programme are awarded two certifications at the end of the academic year: Master in Advanced European and International Studies: This is the diploma of CIFE, certifying the successful completion of the academic curriculum and granting 120 ECTS at Master level. The degree qualification Chargé de mission en organisations européennes et internationales (Policy Officer in European and International Organisations), recognised by the French state as a degree at Master level (level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework EQF). Federalism and Governance This module provides an original perspective on contemporary political institutions, through varied federal and multilevel governance frameworks. Economy and Globalisation The key fact of the last twenty-five years has been the manifold increase of exchanges across the world, in particular in the context of a transition of socialist countries to a market economy and of the rise of new powers. Within this framework, the module analyses the exchanges of goods, services and capitals between countries, considering WTO rules of free trade as well as protectionism. Professional Skills Workshops This module equips the participants with the professional skills and competences that will enable them to work in the context of the European and international organisations: project cycle management, intercultural management, international mediation and negotiation, drafting of position papers and policy recommendations. Overview of the academic year The programme starts off in Nice (October–January) and encompasses introductory classes to all of the five modules, completed by international conferences and seminars dealing with current world politics events. This term is concluded with a mid-term exam. The second term takes place in Canterbury (January–April) at our partner, the University of Kent. During this term, students choose three courses among the curriculum proposed by the School of Politics and International Relations of the University, in line with their specialisation. At the end of the term, students write an essay for each of the three courses. A one-week study trip to the European and international organisations in Strasbourg, Brussels and Luxembourg is organised during this period. During the third term in Berlin (April–July), the programme aims at deepening the students’ knowledge of European integration and contemporary problems in international relations. Our partner in Berlin, the Institut für Europäische Politik, provides a dialogue with European integration experts and offers an insight into political life in Berlin. Moreover, one of the workshops takes place at the University of Rostock. The third term concludes with a final oral examination. In this degree programme (alongside a selection of literature modules) students will take modules that address the phenomenon of empire and its contemporary consequences: for example, nationhood, diaspora and migration. The material studied includes literary texts and theoretical texts as well as life-writing. Students are encouraged to consider how these texts reflect on the colonial experience and the construction of a narrative of its aftermath. This programme's objective is to develop skills in planning, carrying out, writing up and appraising research and to introduce you to the main techniques for qualitative and quantitative research, including conducting surveys, interviewing, running focus groups, designing experimental trails, using life history and observational techniques, and analysing data. The course also provides a base for students who are going on to do an MPhil or PhD by research, or may be of value if you commission or manage social research or use findings from research projects in your professional life. Please note: Students wishing to study on this programme must register MA in Social Research Methods offered by SSPSSR. Modules must be approved by the programme director. Programme structure Full-time students complete the MA in Methods of Social Research over twelve months. Study is divided between taught modules, which last for one term each, and dissertation work. For full-time students, a total of six modules must be taken over the first two terms. Supervised dissertation work, on a relevant agreed subject, is then undertaken during the remainder of the academic year. The MA can be taken on a part-time basis, typically over two years but flexible arrangements are also possible. When taking it over two years, part-time students choose three modules in each academic year, and write a supervised dissertation thereafter. This programme analyses the phenomena of terrorism and political violence as perpetrated by both state and non-state actors, drawing on various disciplines within the Social Sciences. Students will explore the theoretical, methodological, and ethical debates relating to the study of state and non-state violence, and will consider their implications for various international actors and policy-makers. Students will have input from research-active staff with considerable expertise in the fields of International Relations, Sociology and Criminology. Students will assess the measures taken by states and international organisations to deter terrorism, and the relationships between terrorism and counter-terror measures. Students will be asked to critique the various theoretical and methodological approaches deployed by social scientists to study these phenomena. The following questions will be explored: How are we to understand terrorism in contemporary society? How does terrorism differ from other forms of political violence? What is the impact of terrorism on civil liberties? Are there differences between the Global North and the Global South in relation to the use of political violence? How do the social sciences differ in their approaches to terrorism and political violence? The course will also consider the actual risk posed by international terrorism and whether or not the threat is enhanced by the fears and anxieties generated by a risk-averse culture. Scholars and policymakers have all recognised the need to address security and terrorism issues from as broad a range of perspectives as possible, as this will lead to much deeper and better informed understandings of the problems. Therefore, the programme responds to this need, enabling students to explore the security and terrorism challenges we face in the contemporary world from a variety of perspectives drawing from disciplines across the Social Sciences, including International Relations, Sociology and Criminology, as well as drawing on expertise from law and human rights. Programme structure Full-time students complete the MA in Security and Terrorism over twelve months. Study is divided between taught modules, which last for one term each, and dissertation work. For full-time students, a total of six modules must be taken over the first two terms. Supervised dissertation work, on a relevant agreed subject, is then undertaken during the remainder of the academic year. The MA can be taken on a part-time basis, typically over two years but flexible arrangements are also possible. When taking it over two years, part-time students choose three modules in each academic year, and write a supervised dissertation thereafter.
