Masters in Humanities and Social Sciences in Erie in USA. The Master of Social Work (MSW) Program is designed to train students for advanced social work practice with systems of any size (micro, mezzo, and macro). In the foundation year of the master of social work curriculum, students are taught the basics of generalist social work practice. The concentration year focuses on the development of clinical practice skills such as using the DSM V, managing crisis, applying advanced clinical techniques, demonstrating competency in a clinical practicum that emphasizes children and families, and focusing on the clinical needs of other marginalized groups. After the completion of this program, students are encouraged to sit for the licensure at the LMSW (Licensed Master of Social Work) or LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) levels. The two year MSW program is a 60 credit hour program and the one year Advanced Standing MSW Program is a 30-33 credit hour program. Students learn from knowledgeable faculty practical ways to conduct research and how to apply research-based strategies. Daemen’s Education Department is nationally accredited through the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC)/Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) from May 3, 2013-May 3, 2020. Initial/Professional Certification (Grades 1-6) This program is for individuals seeking certification from the State of New York who do not possess a teaching certificate in special education. The student must possess a bachelor’s degree, from an accredited college or university in an acceptable liberal arts concentration and demonstrate a major area of study. In order to receive Initial certification, candidates must successfully pass the edTPA, EAS (Educating All Students), ALST (Academic Literacy Skills Test), and the appropriate CST (Content Specialty Tests). In order to receive Professional certification, the candidate must possess an Initial certification, complete three years of paid, full time teaching experience, and receive one year of mentoring. Graduate Students enrolled in the Initial/Professional program have the opportunity to complete a 40 hour practicum within the Thomas Reynolds Center for Special Education and After-School Programs. As part of the practicum, graduate students work with students with learning disabilities in a supervised after-school setting and develop and implement a remedial Math or ELA lesson aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards. Professional Certification (Grades 1-6) This program is for individuals seeking Professional Certification from the State of New York. The individual must already possess an initial teaching certificate in special education. A copy of his/her teaching certificate must accompany the other required documentation as part of the admissions application. Teacher Preparation Program The Thomas Reynolds Center for Special Education and After-School Programs’ mission statement is to effectively prepare teacher candidates to teach research based learning strategies that assist students with disabilities in mastering academic content within the Common Core standards.
