What is the role of the media in the transformation of contemporary democracies? Why do economic activities result in global and national financial crises and inequality instead of in stability and democratisation? How does governance affect organisations and communication, and how do governance and organisations structure communication and political and economic activity? The Global Politics and Communication programme offers a cutting-edge combination of political science, communication studies and global political economy. Global Political Economy covers multidisciplinary studies drawing on economics, sociology, and political science. Study Environment The Department of Law is closely linked with the Institute for Human Rights which is a renowned unit at Åbo Akademi University. Admission Requirements The programme is open to all applicants holding a Bachelor's degree in law or another Bachelor's degree with at least 45 ECTS in law or other subjects relevant to the legal protection of human rights. Graduates of the DMT programme will be both specialists and innovators that are able to shape future digital media technology. The first year will be similar at both DMT entry point universities KTH and TU Delft with four basic courses on signal processing, computer graphics, web services, and communication networks. The second year will accommodate the technical specialisation. The programme will offer six specialisations: (1) Hypermedia, (2) Media Processing and Communications, (3) Medical Imaging, (4) Media Communications Services, (5) Virtual Environments, (6) Semantic Media. Education content NoVA courses are mapped around three concepts: sights, sites, cites. Throughout the NoVA programme, students focus on the significance of “sight” in relation to theories, practices, and networks of visual studies. With the concept of ”site,” students investigate the geo-political and pedagogical dimensions of space, place, the public sphere, and private realms. And, students are provided with opportunities to critically reflect upon and synthesize previous experiences and knowledge as well as generate new knowledge through “citational” practices that draw upon existing social and cultural texts, theories, artworks, and research. Career opportunities Students that graduate from NoVA will have strong intercultural understanding and experiences, and knowledge of teaching practices and theories in different Nordic countries. This cross-cultural study offers work opportunities internationally in different art, educational, and visual communicational areas, institutions, organisations, communities, art and culture projects. Students may direct themselves toward teaching, guidance, and consultant tasks on different levels of schooling, or in the fields of art and visual and media culture, social sectors and corporate life. Through NoVA, students are prepared for doctoral studies and for the possibility to continue their research profession. The degree alone does not qualify as teacher competency. The programme offers students current perspectives on teaching, studying and learning concerning such domains as biology, chemistry, geography and physics. It aims at widening students' world-view through various scientific key concepts and theories related to the paradigm of education and through the understanding of the interrelationships between natural sciences, technology, society and human beings. It provides students with the teaching knowledge needed mainly on primary and secondary school levels. ADMISSION CRITERIA The eligible applicant must have a BA degree in the area of education. Moreover, all the applicants must submit a recent TOEFL, IELTS or PTE test score, except for those who have completed their bachelor's degree in the following countries: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom or United States. In addition to the academic papers and the English language test results, an eligible applicant ought to provide a motivation letter explaining his/her educational goals and study objectives, as well as a research plan for the Master's thesis, containing research theme, research questions and suggestions regarding research methodology. The two-year International Master's Degree Programme in Early Language Education for Intercultural Communication (120 ECTS) prepares students to teach foreign languages to children. The general strength of the programme is generated by its didactics and methodology relying upon a balanced combination of theory and practice to be used in a future work as a teacher or educator. The programme facilitates gaining a multicultural view on educational issues and sharing personal/collective experience in intercultural settings. The curriculum is composed of the following three study modules: ORIENTATION STUDIES (5 ECTS) This section includes introductory courses that provide students with skills needed for starting his/her studies in the University of Eastern Finland and this particular programme. Welcome to study Sound in New Media Major Subject. The education is project-oriented, joining practice with theory. It combines art, design and media driven aspects of sound, covering a wide range of disciplines from concept design to live performance and from storytelling to programming. Teaching is fully in English, and students can write their Master's thesis in Finnish, Swedish or English. Learning Outcomes The general learning objectives of Sound in New Media are the following core competences, which the students will develop during their studies: project management skills, design skills, transdisciplinary and teamwork skills, musical competence and creative use of software The studies at Media Lab emphasise interdisciplinary and collaborative work, while individual skills are studied in workshops and through tutored studio work according to a personal study plan. You will also learn the theory related to sound design and music culture. Academic communication and writing are a part of the studies, and more research courses can be chosen if you are planning to become a researcher. Students are encouraged to network internationally and have an option to spend a part of their studies abroad. The curriculum contains some essential software and programming courses, but in general we expect students to be either proficient in using the tools of the trade, or willing to set aside time for self-study. For this, we provide a library of tutorials, as well as one-on-one coaching. We work in close collaboration with the best units and faculties in various universities in the Helsinki region, for example Centre for Music and Technology in the Sibelius Academy, as well as the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Acoustics and Signal Processing in Aalto University. The curriculum is designed in co-operation with other academic institutions and the industry, which supports the students' career planning. Career opportunities During your studies, you can specialise according to your personal skills and motivation. Your future careers can relate to the various fields of sound and music design both in private industries and public sector (academia, museums etc.), including game audio and music, sonic interaction design, sound design for animation and sound in media art. Admission procedure and criteria The programme is targeted for students who have completed their BA, BSc or similar degree in sound design or music, or have gained basic sound design skills through other kind of activities.
