In cooperation with the University of Groningen The Double Master’s Programme in Demography and Social Inequality gives first-class students the opportunity to benefit from the outstanding expertise of two top-ranking universities. Participants of the programme spend one year studying at each university and graduate with two master’s degrees: a Master of Sciences in Sociology and Social Research issued by the University of Cologne and a Master of Science in Population Studies issued by the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. The international master's programme focuses on demographic change, population dynamics and the challenges faced by modern societies due to increasing life expectancy, decreasing birth rates and migration. Students will learn to apply advanced social research methods and data analysis, providing necessary tools to deal with current issues such as ageing, social inequality, family, integration and education, among others. Students will have the possibility of acquiring in-depth knowledge of these topics and developing interdisciplinary research skills. Pursuing both a German and a Dutch master’s degree will provide graduates with outstanding employment opportunities on the European and international job market. Degrees awarded:Master of Science in Sociology and Social Research by the University of Cologne and Master of Science in Population Studies by the University of Groningen Language: English Tuition Fees: Students pay a social contribution at the University of Cologne during their first year (approx. €260 per semester, including a ticket for the public transport in the area of North-Rhine Westphalia). Programme The Double Master’s Programme in Demography and Social Inequality focuses on demographic change and the challenges faced by modern societies due to increasing life expectancy, decreasing birth rates and migration. The study programme aims at providing students with a broad methodological expertise and knowledge of a variety of theoretical approaches to human behaviour. Students gain an in-depth understanding of human demographic behaviour and various dimensions of social inequality such as education, social participation and income. The programme will enhance their knowledge on population dynamics and provide necessary methods and tools for analysing and researching demographic data in order to predict individual demographic behaviour and population dynamics. Students of the Double Master’s Programme in Demography and Social Inequality complete their first year at the University of Cologne and their second year at the University of Groningen. Students follow a study path that is integrated into the regular course offer of both universities. The programme is based on the mutual recognition of credit points and includes a joint master’s thesis which is supervised by professors at both universities. After successful completion of the programme, students are awarded two degrees: a Master of Science in Sociology and Social Research by the University of Cologne and a Master of Science in Population Studies by the University of Groningen. Career perspectives Graduates of the Double Master's Programme of Demography and Social Inequality will be particularly well prepared for careers that require extensive academic knowledge of social research and demography on a national or international scale. Graduates will have developed a deep understanding of the effects of population dynamics on the economy, family life, social cohesion and health. Applicants that are shortlisted after assessment of the written application will be invited for a personal interview to the University of Cologne in June.
