What is common to all of these applications is that information sources and control are decentralised over the network and multiple data centres and their underlying systems become distributed, reconfigurable and adaptive. All this makes the process of developing distributed software systems significantly more complex than for centralised systems. Cloud Computing and Services will provide students with a system of knowledge both in formal foundations, technological platforms and practical skills in implementing distributed software applications. The programme will also provide an insight into current and future directions of the distributed software development. After completion of the study, students understand and know how to use large distributed systems. On top of this they are also capable of designing and constructing cloud computing systems and services on networking and computing infrastructures. The programme in Digital Media Technology focuses on enabling technologies for digital media systems, including technologies for analysing media, generating interactive media, processing and coding, optimising wired and wireless transfer, and distributing digital 3D contents. Graduates of the DMT programme will be both specialists and innovators that are able to shape future digital media technology. The first year will be similar at both DMT entry point universities KTH and TU Delft with four basic courses on signal processing, computer graphics, web services, and communication networks. The second year will accommodate the technical specialisation. The programme will offer six specialisations: (1) Hypermedia, (2) Media Processing and Communications, (3) Medical Imaging, (4) Media Communications Services, (5) Virtual Environments, (6) Semantic Media. Programme The first year is similar at the two entry points with four basic courses on signal processing, computer graphics, programming web services and internet communication. In addition, some elective courses may be chosen to prepare for a specialisation. An important part of the programme are the Innovation & Entrepreneurship (I&E) courses. The I&E basics course provides an introduction to business and management. The Business Development Lab extends media systems engineering projects by a market survey, a business model generation process, and a venture development exercise. We emphasize user driven innovation and holistic analysis of service, technology, organisation and financial perspectives, as new media technologies are disruptive for existing business models and almost always have a significant impact on the culture and social relations. Society-relevant themes will also be at the core of the summer schools, which will bring students from the different entry points together. Students participating in the DMT track are offered an internship with an industry partner or research centre of the EIT Digital to work on their thesis project. Directly linked to the master thesis is the I&E minor thesis that specifies the requirements, strategy and business plan for the selected thesis project. The art of our times works increasingly in interaction with research, planning, activism and public debate. Criticism, fiction, experimental writing and textual performance are among the methods we use in exploring the margins, boundaries and contexts of artistic work. The Major Subject combines art, design and media driven aspects of sound design in the digital era, covering a wide range of disciplines from concept design to live performance and from storytelling to programming. In addition to professors and teachers of the partner universities, teaching resources
are extended through our wide international networks in the field. The studies are targeted for students who have completed their BA, BSc or similar degree (e.g. in Polytechnic/ Applied Science) in sound design or music, or have gained basic
sound design skills on the side of their studies through other kind of activities. The courses are provided by several units and faculties in various universities in the Helsinki region. Curriculum-wise our main partners are the Centre for Music and Technology in the Sibelius Academy, and the Department of Media Technology in the Aalto University School of Science. Studies begin with an orientative starting block entitled Understanding Media, Art and Design. After completing that, through tutoring students choose their focus areas and start to participate in courses, digital media studio work, seminars, workshops and study projects. Individual study planning for new students is tutored by the teacher in charge of the Major Subject, face-to-face, in great detail. The programme is fully taught in English, and students can write their thesis in Finnish, Swedish or English. The general learning objectives of the Major Subject are the following core competences which the students will gain during their studies: project management skills, design skills, transdisciplinary skills, musical competence and creative use of software. The student will learn design skills, project management skills, prototyping skills, research skills, ability to work and communicate with a group of professionals with different competences, and will gain deeper skills in the student’s own area of expertise within the field of sound and music design. Academic skills The student will learn about theoretical aspects on sound design and music and will be able to reflect upon her/his own work from theoretical point of view. Academic communication and writing are a part of the studies, and more research courses can be chosen if the student is planning to become a researcher. Students and researchers are encouraged to network internationally and have an option to spend a part of their studies abroad through any of our exchange programmes. Education content The studies are characterized by collaboration in an experimental and critical environment in which interaction and work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams occurs on a wide scale between students and staff as well as with students of other faculties and institutions. By nature studying sound design and music in the context of ’new media’ is focused on emerging fields and practices and related tools and technologies for communication, creative production and distribution. The programme is fully taught in English, and students can write their thesis in Finnish, Swedish or English. Content outcomes A student who graduates from the programme is able to understand the complex demands of New Media and has the skills required in special areas of creative collaboration, concept development, design and realisation. A graduate has a broad enough understanding of the diversification across disciplines for a holistic view of the field of New Media, in addition to a deepened knowledge into his/her own special expertise. He/she is capable to critically analyse and develop established digital and new media design traditions, as well as able to extend his/her professional competence and provide creative input the development of the design field of New Media. A graduate is expected to have reached a level of proficiency where further external or doctoral studies can be undertaken Skill outcomes During the studies students are expected to get familiar with a variety of tools, to understand the characteristics of new media. Students are expected to be both productive and creative as well have an analytical framework to operate with in the field as a New Media professionals. Academic skills Academic communication and writing are a significant part of the studies, and additional research oriented courses can be chosen if the student plans for an academic orientation. Students and researchers are encouraged to network internationally and have and option to spend a part of their studies abroad through any of our exchange programmes. Education content Running since 1994, about 15-20 new students start their studies every year. Our applicants' backgrounds vary widely and we have always attempted to recruit a true interdisciplinary team of students with each intake. Sharing knowledge and working in collaborative groups within experimental production and research processes is a basic premise of our work in the Media Lab. The studies of the Media Lab are characterized by collaboration in an experimental and critical environment in which interaction and work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams occurs on a wide scale between students and staff as well as with students of other faculties and institutions. By nature studies in ’new media’ emphasize emerging fields and practices and related tools and technologies for communication, creative production and distribution. In practice graduates of the Media Lab tend to become employed in ’new’ roles and ’emerging professions’ within the broad gamut of the new media industry, as well as in related research and development activities. During the programme, students will specialise according to their personal skills and motivation. Their future professional profiles relate to the various fields of new media design and research including interaction design, information design, interface design, interactive and generative storytelling, new media production, software design and digital animation. The curriculum contains a number of software tools courses, but in general we expect students to be either proficient in using the tools of the trade, or willing to set aside time for self-study. For this, we provide a library of tutorials, as well as one-on-one coaching. The students can also continue their studies to doctoral degree. Career opportunities and titles During the programmes, students specialise according to their personal skills and motivation. Internationalisation The Major Subject provides an excellent basis for an international career. A significant number of the department’s applicants, students, teachers and researchers are from abroad, and all the courses are taught in English. Admission procedure The selection to the MA in New Media, Major in New Media Design and Production happens in the ARTS Aalto master's student’s admission process. A group of students representing a variety of skills, backgrounds and talents are chosen every spring. The process consists of three steps: a written application which describes your background, experience and motivation, followed by a set of assignments and finally, an interview, which also includes a portfolio pitch. A selection committee representing their own professional fields reviews all steps of application procedure. Grounds for the selection of students include proven artistic/designer talent, motivation and personal development potential as well as the applicant's academic history, cultural activities and previous activities in the field of new media. Deciding factors are demonstrated talent and suitability within the desired field of study. The selection is based on application documents, the applicant's personal aims and motivation as a student, an interview and entrance test assignments, prepared in advance, as well as work presented during the interview.
