Esta formación hace posible que hoy en día haya ingenieros industriales en áreas tan diversas como gerencia, dirección y gestión de la producción, gestión de compras, mantenimiento, diseño mecánico, eléctrico y térmico de maquinaria y equipos, automatización y control, desarrollo de proyectos de construcciones e instalaciones industriales, urbanismo, etc. La formación generalista es también la que hace que sea un profesional muy valioso para las pequeñas y medianas empresas, lo que es corroborado por la gran demanda de trabajo existente para los titulados en Ingeniería Industrial.
