Engineering

In order to successfully obtain a Masters qualification, you will need to obtain a number of credits by passing individual modules. Most taught Masters will have a number of core modules which you must take and pass in order to obtain the qualification. The assessment of research Masters is almost always entirely by a single dissertation module or project.

Improvements made to manmade things such as tools, structures and machines are largely due to the efforts of people in the field of engineering. These people combine creativity with mathematics and worldly knowledge, resulting in innovation.

Distance education or distance learning is a way of delivering education and instruction, often on an individual basis, to students who are not physically present on campus.

MEng The MEng is an integrated masters degree in engineering that offers you an opportunity to fulfil the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. The MEng course aims to meet professional development needs as specified by the Engineering Council and relevant engineering institutions in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). Entry to this qualification is either via our BEng (Hons) (B65 or Q65) or an accredited engineering bachelors degree from another institution. The MEng must be completed within four years from the date of graduation of the undergraduate degree. This qualification is accredited for Chartered Engineer status by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). A pathway through our MEng is also accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Educational aims This engineering degree builds on recent and previous study and offers you an opportunity to fulfil the educational requirements for chartered status. The MEng programme aims to meet professional development needs as specified by the Engineering Council UK and relevant engineering institutions in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). Teaching, learning and assessment methods Knowledge and understanding are acquired through distance-learning materials, including specially written study materials, module guides, assignments and project guides; through a range of computer-based activities; through CD-ROM, Web- and text-based resource materials; and through tutor feedback on assignments. Computer-conferencing facilities provide an environment where you can deepen your understanding through discussion with other students and tutors. Within the constraints laid down, you may choose the modules you study, thus developing knowledge and understanding in a range of topics (or ‘streams’) to suit your personal needs and interests. Cognitive skills are developed through a range of activities including self-assessment exercises, multimedia tasks and computer-based investigations. They are supported by tutor-led discussions and activities at regional tutorials and day schools or online and by tutor feedback on assignments. The first three of the practical and professional skills (listed above) refer to the vocational relevance of the degree. All teaching and assessment strategies will help you to develop skills that are transferable to the workplace, whatever combination of modules you take. The compulsory Level 3 and Level M projects are designed to consolidate these skills. The final skill is developed through a hands-on approach using appropriate software packages and associated assessment strategies. Key skills are taught and developed within the teaching materials. They are explicitly assessed throughout the degree and are supported by tutor feedback on assignments. They are specifically addressed in the two compulsory modules T191 Personal and career development in engineering and T397 Key skills for professional engineers. There are progressively increasing expectations of your key skills as you move from Level 1 through Level 2 to Level 3. Key skills also have strong vocational relevance and can transfer directly to the workplace. Teaching and learning will be via study materials (including study guides, textbooks, set books, audio and video material, home activity kits, and module-related software), optional face-to-face or online tutorials, at least two compulsory week-long residential schools, plus individualised tutor feedback. Continuous assessment will be via written, tutor-marked assignments and/or computer-marked assignments; end-of-module assessment via examination or written project. On successful completion of the required modules you can be awarded a Master of Engineering entitling you to use the letters MEng (Open) after your name. Fees and time The MEng must be completed within four years from the date of graduation of the undergraduate degree. This qualification comprises of 120 credits of PG study (plus an additional 15 credits of UG study if your UG qualification is not from the OU). For postgraduate study the total cost depends on the modules studied. As a guide the fees for 2012/13 ranged from £5,865 to £6,690. The 2013/14 fees for the undergraduate study component (360 credits) are £5,124 per 120 credits. NB: As part of the BEng you will required to attend two UK-based residential schools (T176 and T276) and the cost of accommodation, food and travel is not included in the module fee. The MEng also has a compulsory module with UK-based residential schools. This does include accommodation and food but the cost of travel is not included in the module fee. Career impact Employers value the OU MEng. With this qualification you will: improve your creative problem solving skills improve your ability to turn concepts into a reality improve your project management and team working skills be well placed to take advantage of employment opportunities both at home and abroad. The program's twelve core units, and project thesis, provide you with the practical knowledge and skills required. Students with a background in electrical, mechanical, instrumentation and control, or industrial computer systems engineering can benefit from this program. The content has been carefully designed to provide you with relevant concepts and the tools required in today’s fast-moving work environment. For example, Power Engineering covers major equipment and technologies used in power systems, including power generation, transmission and distribution networks. Programmable Logic Controllers covers in-depth principles of operation of programmable controllers, networking, distributed controllers, and program control strategies. Industrial Process Control Systems combines the process identification and feedback control design with a broad understanding of the hardware, system architectures and software techniques widely used to evaluate and implement complex control solutions. Industrial Instrumentation identifies key features of widely used measurement techniques and transducers combined with microprocessor devices to create robust and reliable industrial instruments. Process Engineering will enable students to evaluate and apply complex process calculations through application of control principles. Industrial Data Communications provides the requisite knowledge to manage modern field buses and industrial wireless systems. Safety Systems provides an introduction to the common safety philosophy of hazard identification, risk management and risk-based design of protection methods and functional safety systems. SCADA and DCS cover hardware and software systems, evaluation of typical DCS and SCADA systems and configuration of DCS controllers. Special Topics enable students to incorporate current technologies and the knowledge acquired from the entire course and thus solve complex Industrial Automation problems. The Masters project, as the capstone of the course, requires a high level of personal autonomy and accountability, and reinforces the knowledge and skill base developed in the preceding subjects. As a significant research component of the course, this project will facilitate research, critical evaluation and the application of knowledge and skills with creativity and initiative, enabling students to critique current professional practice in the Industrial Automation industry. COURSE FEES What are the fees for my country? The Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) provides distance education to students located almost anywhere in the world – it is one of the very few truly global training institutes. Course fees are paid in a currency that is determined by the student’s location. A full list of fees in a currency appropriate for every country would be complex to navigate and, with today’s exchange rate fluctuations, difficult to maintain. Instead we aim to give you a rapid response regarding fees that is customised to your individual circumstances. We understand that cost is a major consideration before a student commences study. For a rapid reply to your enquiry regarding courses fees and payment options, please enquire via the below button and we will respond within 2 business days. [-]

Master Program in Information Security, 120.0 Credits

During the first year of your studies important concepts within the area will be defined, for example information security, safety, critical systems, information classification, and risk analysis. Other important issues are techniques to transfer information between users in business and how transferring can be made in a secure way. Internet Secutity is a course during the first year where you learn more about this. You also gain knowledge of professions and roles from a security perspective and important standards used. The first year is completed by project work in a company or a public authority. The function of cooperation and collaboration and the system for decision making are important when working with security. Therefore, during the second year you learn about information security management. Research within the area of information security is one other issue during the second year. Parallel to this, you can choose between various courses focused on technologies or management. The thesis is also written during the last year.... [-]
