Profile of the programme The master’s degree in business engineering offers graduates management training that is based on traditional courses (finance, marketing, accounting, law, industrial economics, etc.) but also on specific disciplines that are in high demand in the market, such as the environment, logistics, auditing, entrepreneurship, production management, etc. The curriculum includes: A first year of 60 credits distributed across a common core (human resource management, statistical and econometric methods in management, logistics, financial management, advanced marketing, advanced microeconomics, tax and business law, production management and one of four major options: finance, marketing, auditing and international management). They are based on a common formation, the choice of a specialising field and the progressive and coordinated organization of personal works. Profile of the programme The common core programme provides a background in solid and fluid mechanics, in machinery, in heat transfer and in design/production. One third of the training is customised by the choice of one of three specialising field: The Controlled Systems focus allows to get into design of automated and mechatronic systems focusing on advanced integration of components from different technologies. The focus is mainly on continuous industrial processes and electronic controls. The Energy and Power Systems focus considers rational management of energy and on sustainable development. With this training, the engineer can play a vital role in the control of various processes for production, conversion and transmission of power and energy while reducing their harmful effects. This field directly benefits from the research done by the Energy Cluster. The Machine Design and Production Engineering focus provides an additional training in the design, production, operation and maintenance of mechanical systems in traditional industrial sectors. In particular, ones can notice courses offered in computer-aided kinematics and dynamics and in reliability of industrial plants. This training is linked to the Risk Cluster of the FPMs. Personal work and professional experience amount to 40% of the total study load. This enables integration and gradual application of skills acquired throughout the curriculum. In addition to the master thesis, the student in mechanical engineering carries out a second major personal assignment under the form of a project in the final year. This work, associated to the specialising field, enables to put into practice the specific skills of the specialization. It places the student in the position of the engineer who is assigned mission defined by industry. The master thesis contributes to research and development training and is a specific feature of engineering education. Profile of the programme Besides the core courses, the curriculum gives opportunities to develop personal work through projects, in particular with the Master thesis and other various projects within the framework of the two-year master's curriculum. A closer look at the various positions occupied by the electrical engineers of our Faculty reveals a great diversity of functions : in research offices, research labs, in the service sector (banks, insurance companies, etc.), in education (in Belgium and abroad), in the public sector, in supervising committees, transportation, telecommunications (telephony, broadcasting, satellites, fiber optics , wireless, multimedia, networks), in the production and transportation of energy, in electrical and mechanical engineering, …. From the giant electric power station to transoceanic photonic data links, via the microprocessor, the electrical engineer is required to study all aspects of the operation of electricity: Design and delivery of electrical power networks, telecommunication satellites, fiber optic cables for intercontinental data links; man-machine interfaces, such as speech recognition; modeling and automation of industrial processes; Design and production of microelectronic circuits; Development of renewable energies; Development of still growing scope of microprocessors; Activities in the biomedical field, where the electrical engineer is a true partner of the doctor; Business computerization and telematic networks (Internet, Intranet and fast networks). Therefore, the Master of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering is a major actor in prospection and evaluation of deposits, extraction of ores and hydrocarbons, and in the processing of ores and minerals. In addition, these processes will be dealt by the Master of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering with the most adequate technical and economic means together with the lowest environmental impact. Human infrastructures, set up at the surface and into the subsurface of the earth, strongly rely on the characteristics of the soils and rocks. The expertise of the Master of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering is therefore of prime importance to the design and the achievement of civil engineering projects such as tunnels, dams, bridges, buildings, underground storage, etc. Masters of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering prevent effects on human infrastructures of natural events such as earthquakes, landslides, etc. He or she will also prevent the impacts of human activities on the environment and on natural resources. In other words, the engineer is involved in problems such as groundwater protection area, rehabilitation of polluted sites, geological storage of CO2 and radioactive waste. Profile of the programme During the course of their studies, students in geology and mining engineering acquire a good knowledge both in Earth sciences and in engineering sciences. A basic training in Earth sciences - geology, mineralogy, petrography, stratigraphy, palaeontology and tectonics - is completed by training in hydrogeology, in applied geophysics, in geostatistics and modelling in geology. The training in mining engineering concerns rock mechanics, modelling in rock mechanics, extraction of mineral resources, mineral and waste processing, drilling technologies and reservoir engineering. The training in mining and geology offers two options: Resources and Infrastructures focused on ore-forming processes, design and construction of mining-like structures and, planning and optimisation of mining operations (Project) Environment and Natural Risks focused on management of geological risks, characterisation of brownfields subsurface and remediation of polluted soils. It also contains a specific project. Practice both in laboratory and on the field is specific to geology and mining engineering studies. Corporate visits, field excursions, field camps and a study tour are organised during the course of the studies. Learning is strongly connected with research (The Mining and Geology Division participates to 3 of the 5 research clusters of the Faculty of Engineering – Materials, Energy and Risks). Erasmus conventions were signed with several Institutions, especially in Spain. Manage problems of environment and sustainable development in connection with mineral and energy resources, water resources, waste, polluted sites, geological hazards. Apply adequate methodologies, techniques and tools to efficiently solve technical, economic and environmental issues as mentioned above. Occupational profiles Graduating in geology and mining engineering offers a wide range of job opportunities worldwide as well as in Belgium. Extractive industries and, more generally speaking, heavy industries are the traditional sectors of employment. Masters of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering find jobs in mines and quarries, oil and gas production companies, groundwater production companies, cement works, mineral processing plants, steelmaking plants, etc. They occupy positions both in production departments as well as in R&D departments. There are also job opportunities in fields such as engineering geology and geotechnics for activities like: designing and construction of tunnels, dams and bridges or the management of geological risks (earthquakes, landslides, etc.), both in construction companies and in consultancies.
