All core courses dedicated to electrical students cover all the fields of electrical engineering such as electrical machines, electronics (including power electronics) and microprocessor systems, automatic control, telecommunications, signals processing, computer networks, multimedia, embedded systems, advanced process control, robotics, bio-engineering, numerical analysis, high voltage networks, ... Profile of the programme Besides the core courses, the curriculum gives opportunities to develop personal work through projects, in particular with the Master thesis and other various projects within the framework of the two-year master's curriculum. These projects are for electrical engineering students the opportunity to perform all steps of the design of practical electrical systems, such as, for example (not exhaustive list): ADSL modems, GSM or MP3 codecs, industrial sorting system controls, camera memory card readers, identification of bioprocess models, electric vehicles, … Moreover, the electrical division offers students the opportunity to do their Master thesis abroad within the framework of student exchange programmes (ERASMUS) between the academic staff and a large number of universities or engineering schools all over the world (University of Stuttgart, University Laval in Quebec, University of Montreal, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Institute of Technology at Linköping, University of Edinburgh, Ecole Nationale des Telecommunications de Paris, etc..). In particular, thanks to its membership of the TIME (Top Industrial Managers for Europe) network, the FPMs makes it possible for some students to get a double Master's degree with other institutions involved in the network (Supélec in Paris and Metz, Ecole Centrale de Lille, Politecnico di Milano, etc.). Finally, the third objective of the curriculum is to offer a specialization domain chosen among three focuses: Multimedia and Telecommunications (related to the FPMS NTIC cluster) has close links with the research centre MULTITEL, founded by the FPMs in 1999, which is known as a worldwide centre of excellence in the field of signal processing, information technology, and telecommunications. Students have the option of carrying out their Master thesis in collaboration with MULTITEL researchers with whom they also have privileged contacts in the framework of specialized courses. Biosystems Engineering (related to the UMONS BIOSYS cluster), makes links between process modeling & control, signal processing, and life science engineering . This specialism allows to provide electrical engineers with a solid background, not only in industrial process automation, but also in biological systems modeling and biomedical signal processing. Energy & Electricity (related to the FPMS ENERGY cluster) focuses on current key issues in the specialization field, such as renewable energies, the liberalization of the electricity market, transport… Moreover, it offers the opportunity of carrying out a major corporate study in collaboration with industry. This work aims to provide results directly usable by the associated companies. The courses in "Multimedia and Telecommunications" and "Biosystems Engineering" are taught in English, and the examination is done either in English or in French, according to the student’s preference. (Energy & Electricity focus) Occupational profiles Inheriting from 200 years of technological developments stemming from the “magic of light”, electrical engineers have been assigned a wide variety of missions. A closer look at the various positions occupied by the electrical engineers of our Faculty reveals a great diversity of functions : in research offices, research labs, in the service sector (banks, insurance companies, etc.), in education (in Belgium and abroad), in the public sector, in supervising committees, transportation, telecommunications (telephony, broadcasting, satellites, fiber optics , wireless, multimedia, networks), in the production and transportation of energy, in electrical and mechanical engineering, …. From the giant electric power station to transoceanic photonic data links, via the microprocessor, the electrical engineer is required to study all aspects of the operation of electricity: Design and delivery of electrical power networks, telecommunication satellites, fiber optic cables for intercontinental data links; man-machine interfaces, such as speech recognition; modeling and automation of industrial processes; Design and production of microelectronic circuits; Development of renewable energies; Development of still growing scope of microprocessors; Activities in the biomedical field, where the electrical engineer is a true partner of the doctor; Business computerization and telematic networks (Internet, Intranet and fast networks). Access to further studies The Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering can lead to postgraduate studies in order to specialize, do further training or research: either by completing another Engineering Master’s degree, at the University of Mons or any other European university, e.g. in Quality Control and Management, Industrial Risks and Operational Safety, Transportation Management, Master in Business Administration, etc. or by conducting a PhD thesis in engineering sciences possibly with the support of research clusters of the Faculty and the University of Mons.
