Accepted applicants must complete five (5) program prerequisites (3 semester/4 quarter units each) by July 31 prior to entering the program: Research Methods in Psychology, Introductory Statistics, Personality Theory, Abnormal Psychology, and Developmental Psychology. All incoming Advanced Standing students must successfully complete the MSW Advanced Standing Gateway prior to beginning the 30-credit advanced curriculum. This 6-credit summer course is designed to immerse these graduates in Wheelock's justice-based philosophy and the curricular themes that are foundational to our courses and field work. It builds on the students' knowledge, skills, and values through a two-month intensive course and field-based experience. Students complete 100 hours in their field placement, as well as take part in courses two to three evenings a week during the summer. During the concentration year practicum, students will be placed in an agency/setting where they can demonstrate advanced skills and practices that focus on some aspect of work with children and families, particularly groups of children and families whose life chances and well being are challenged by issues of poverty, homelessness, violence, and the like. Students are in their placement 24 hours weekly throughout the concentration year and complete a minimum total of 720 hours for the full academic year. Field placement days are not predetermined; the schedule is a collaborative effort between the student and the Field Instructor. The pedagogical approach for the core faculty of our program is based on the principals of constructivism in which students actively engage in learning through collaborative and experiential experiences. Our faculty members encourage students to co-create knowledge through reflection on learning and integration of experiences, and applying learning to internships and clinical work. Students learn various theories and are then encouraged to develop their own theoretical approach to the practice of art therapy. The completion of a master's Capstone Project allows students to apply knowledge in the continuum of practice in art therapy, specality areas of focus, and research. While the core curriculum has a mental health focus, other non-clinical areas of emphasis are offered such as Art Therapy in the Schools and Medical Art Therapy. Personal art making is required across the curriculum in a variety of assignments, including visual journaling. ‌Fully-stocked, 2,000 square foot art-making studio is conveniently located on campus to students around the clock. Internships provide students with three semesters (child, adolescent and adult) of hands-on experience in a variety of settings throughout Hampton Roads.‌ Admissions Requirements Both personal characteristics and academic qualifications of applicants are evaluated to insure that students are capable of developing professional competence as art therapists.
