Since this program combines international cooperation with development, it gives students an overview and deeper understanding of essential ideas and practices of International Development and Cooperation (IDC). Therefore, the program provides students topical and thoughtful learning on the academic product of IDC. The program also provides students with political, economic, social and environmental perspectives of IDC through a multidisciplinary approach. Trying to incorporate objective viewpoints about governmental aid policies from developing countries in the South to developed countries in the North, it aims to explore a well-rounded view of developmental strategies as well as actors' behavior and precise issues of international cooperation. The program is divided into three parts: (1) knowledge and information regarding the key motive power of IDC and Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) perspectives, (2) various IDC discourse such as development theories and their practical application cases, and (3) and exploration of contemporary politico-economic issues in the field of IDC. Finally the program is designed for students seeking to work in national/international public agencies, NGOs, non-profit organizations, and governments dealing with IDC issues. Required courses Option A Qualitative Research Methods This course is designed for students who are beginning their dissertation projects. The aim of the course is to give students the tools to conceptualize their theses in terms of research questions and design, methodology, data collection, and qualitative analysis. In doing so, this course focuses more narrowly on the issues, problems, and strategies related to "small-N" qualitative research, for the most part settingaside the techniques of large-N statistical analysis, which is presumed best to be taught in a separate course. Students will read and discuss texts related to theory formation and hypothesis testing; creating variables and measurement; descriptive and causal inference; longitudinal, comparative case study research; field data collection; working with texts and analyzing qualitative data; and, finally, dissertation write-up. This course is divided into four main parts focusing on the following topics: (1) the goals of social science and elements of research design; (2) selecting and application of different methodologies for conducting research; (3) collection of primary and secondary data on the field; and (4) analysis and synthesis of qualitative data in the dissertation-writingprocess. Option B Qualitative Research Design and Methods This Course deals with the general logic of scientific inquiry, research design, sampling, measurement, statistical inference, causal analyses, rational choice theory, and game theory. By the end of this course, you should be able to conceptualize a research problem and develop a number of complementary design, measurement, and date collection approaches to bring evidence to bear on the problem. In this course you will also learn to apply economic reasoning and game theory to interactive situations, that is, to situations in which (1) people have conflicting goals and (2) are affected in important ways by each other's actions. We will use game theory to understand when and how the incentives of individuals can work against the interests of the group, and how this kind of problem can be overcome. Introduction to International Development and Cooperation The course is a topical and theoretical approach to international development and cooperation studies. The course will provide students with political, economic, social and environmental dimensions of development and cooperation through a multidisciplinary approach. The dramatic and rising importance of global civil society is undoubtedly underway throughout the world. Non-Governmental Organizaitons (NGOs) in the non-profit sector as a part of this exciting new development are working with, collaborating with and/or competing with governments as well as markets as interdependence and globalization begin to change our understanding of society and politics. In these transformative times NGOs are often regarded as being the driving force behind global changes in politics, economics, and social/cultural as well as ethical global issues. It is vital therefore to understand the connections, dynamics and relationships between state and non-state actors working in the contemporary global political era. NGOs, in their strategies and policy objectives, crucially, may even go beyond the domestic boundaries of sovereign states into the realm of global governance. NGOs therefore represent a practical strategic part of rethinking the site and nature of politics, power and authority in the 21st century. Reflecting upon the growing importance of NGOs and civil society, the NGO Studies major at AJOU GSIS seeks to develop an understanding of domestic as well as international networking processes by combining theory and practice in this field of study. For this purpose, the NGO Studies major provides prospective students with broad categories of subjects ranging from managerial skills for NGOs to NGO strategic cooperation wth international organizations. Along with two required courses (NGO Introduction and Research Methods), the NGO major offers four broad categories of classes related to current NGO activities. The need for an in-depth study of international trade stems from a humble premise that any analysis of economic, political and social implicaitons of exchange between traders in two or more national markets differs from that between traders within a national market. International trade as a means for achieving better international cooperation and economic development is undisputable. Trade relations among countries have evolved through collective debate, negotiations, agreements and on many, varied and complex issues. To strengthen the world economy for a sustainable development of trade, investment, employment and income growth, the need to develop and nurture human resources for such an economic task is indispensable. It is in this respect that AJOU GSIS has taken the cue to train experts and professionals for governments, public institutions, private companies and firms, or individuals, with a view to enhancing their skills and understanding in the field of international trade, to handle the intricacies, issues, and challenges of the world trading system for a better future. Required courses Quantitative Analysis for Business and Economy (Pre-requisite) The main objective of this course is to equip students with the ability to correctly interpret statistical results. Special focus is placed on how to differentiate sound analysis from those that are not. This is critical in today's world where quantitative analyses is heavily used (or misused) in public policy and management debates. The course is composed of two parts. In the first part, students will learn basic statistics. Specifically, students will be exposed to the concepts of statistical inference, probability, probability distribution, sampling distribution, estimation, and hypothesis testing. In the second part, students will learn basic econometrics. Having mastered simple regression, students will also learn the basics of multiple regression analysis. Successful completion of this course will equip students to take a Ph.D. level course offered in the subsequent terms. International (Trade) Law This survey course will address and visit various issues, aspects and implications of public international law and institutions ranging from GATT to the World Trade Organization and beyond. Primary concentration will be on principles, norms, and policies of international trade law. It is hoped that the students can dictate the pace and topics through vigorous discussions. WTO and International Trade Policy This course is based on "International Trade" course, which was covered in the 1st semester. Based on the theoretical models, such as H-O model, Rechardo model, and specific factor model, the class investigate what are trade policies and its impact on countries' economic welfare. The class covers both theory and case studies and also focus on trade policies and pending trade issues like FTA and WTO. International Trade & Development This course covers international trade theory to explain why countries trade and international trade policy to answer what a nation's trade policy should be. In this course, you will learn how to analyze the causes and effects of international trade with simple algebra and graphical analysis. International Finance : Market and Policy The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with foreign exchange markets and the nature of foreign exchange risk. Topics for the course include the determination of exchange rates, both spot and forward rates, and the arbitrage relationships that link prices and interest rates throughout the world. The balance of payments of a country is also studied, and its relationship to assessing country risk is explored. Familiarity with elementary macroeconomics and monetary theory is useful in the course, but where these ideas are required, they are developed from first principles. [-]
