The first semester you take multidisciplinary courses that focus on sustainable development as a political and professional challenge and contribute to theoretical and empirical insights into the complexity of different environmental problems and their connection to social and economic dimensions. You develop an understanding of how environmental problems are framed and how these frames impact on what strategies and solutions are chosen as well as help explain why some problems are not handled at all. You also gain knowledge of what the role as a professional public official and planner can and ought to mean when working for a more sustainable society. The Master’s programme prepares graduates for the different occupations related to the real estate, government and construction management sectors. The hands-on approach to teaching and learning implies that class projects consist of activities that will provide students with job-related skills. The department’s close links with industry, local professional bodies and a strong alumni network allow the university to continually stay abreast of current developments and integrate these into our course offerings. Programme outline The curriculum of the programme covers four terms of full-time study. Within the programme it is possible to specialise in: Construction Project Management, Real Estate Development and Land Law or Building and Real Estate Economics. Some of the courses in Real Estate Development and Land Law are taught in Swedish. The first semester consists mainly of foundation courses for all students, after which it is possible to specialise according to educational background and interest. In the final semester, students will prepare a degree project thesis. Degree project Students will carry out a detailed study of a subject area within the scope of the programme. This provides the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired from the courses, in a scientific manner, to a problem chosen within the research profile of the track. The degree project may be carried out at a company in Sweden or abroad, or students may work independently in an area of their own choice, as long as it falls within the research profile of the track. Once completed, the degree project will be presented in a seminar. Career prospects Given the borderless nature of the subjects covered in the programme, graduates are trained for careers in the real estate, government and construction management sectors, both nationally and internationally. Career options for graduates cover various areas within the fields of valuation, real estate taxation, real estate management, property/facilities management and development; construction and project management, planning, building and environmental law, real estate law, and land administration. Graduates can expect to work in organisations such as: - Advisory firms, banks, pension funds, insurance companies - Property and asset management companies, development companies, real estate appraisal/valuation firms, and real estate capital groups - Infrastructural development organisations - Land registration and cadastral agencies and other related regulatory bodies - Architectural firms, technical consultant firms, construction management firms, real estate companies, construction companies, client and facilities management organisations and public organisations. There is an increasing understanding of the importance of good lighting design in urban areas, buildings and interiors. Light is fundamental to architecture and essential for human well-being, and its quality affects human behaviour, comfort, health, efficiency, safety and security. The one-year Master’s programme in Architectural Lighting Design is based on a new approach to light and light planning – a combination of visual, physical and biological-based experience and knowledge applied to design, technology and health. Programme outline The programme provides in-depth understanding of the field of Architectural Lighting Design through scientific-based knowledge and practical experience in the area of artificial light and daylight. The aim of the course is to teach the ability to apply advanced knowledge in this area, in both practical and academic situations. Four courses are given during the one-year programme. Light and Humans The aim of the module is to learn about the relationship between light and humans, which is mediated by the physical space. Knowledge related to light qualities, cultural and human aspects, light sources and materials is combined with experience of the design process. The outcome should be the ability to develop a complete solution for a lighting design object. Light and Space – outdoor The connection between light and outdoor environments – especially urban contexts, in its physical and cultural characters – is addressed through the expansion of lighting knowledge and vocabulary. The design task in this track concludes with a full-scale outdoor installation. The ability to work with light sources and the design process is expanded and critical assessment of the design solution is promoted. Light and Space – indoor The importance of dealing with daylight as well as artificial lighting in indoor spaces is addressed through activities related to sources and technology, space theory, visual ergonomics and performance. Design process, planning and presentation techniques will be handled in activities and tasks. Light and Science Theoretical knowledge about light and its relationship to space and humans is further developed through discussions between students and researchers in the field. Lectures combine with experimental sessions and study visits. The ability to analyse lighting conditions through the understanding of the visual and physical concepts of light will be developed in a case study and presented as an academic paper. Degree project The programme is concluded with a thesis project, the focus of which may be chosen from a wide variety of topics within the Architectural Lighting Design field. Theoretical papers about light and health, light and time, urban lighting, perception and information, as well as practical projects with a theoretical frame in rural lighting and interactive lighting design are a few examples among the developed works. Career prospects Lighting is an expanding field of knowledge. In recent years there has been a growing demand for lighting design expertise, as lighting designers understand the role of light and lighting in architecture, interior spaces and urban environment. They can add important value to a project by enhancing visual performance, energy efficiency, sustainability, safety, well-being and health. There are plentiful job opportunities for architects, designers and engineers with lighting design competence. European regions are more and more interlinked, and cooperation across national borders is now a routine aspect of the work of spatial and environmental planners. There are considerable differences in how planning is conducted across Europe, and planners are increasingly required to communicate across cultural and institutional boundaries. This European dimension of planning requires a new generation of spatial and environmental planners, who are aware of and can respond to as well as influence EU and international policy, are sensitive to cultural and institutional differences across Europe, and are capable to cooperate with spatial planners in other European countries. The Joint Masters Programme in European Spatial Planning, Environmental Policies and Regional Development (‘PLANET Europe’) is the first integrated European Masters programme that offers a comprehensive education in the rich and dynamic area of European spatial planning. PLANET Europe gives students from all over the world the opportunity to acquire important skills and knowledge in European spatial planning, while at the same time benefiting from Europe’s cultural and linguistic diversity. The Master thesis in semester 4 can, subject to agreement with the supervisors, be studied as a distance course. The objectives of the program are achieved through the courses included in the exam. Assessment and grading are done at module level and details concerning assessment and grading is available in each course syllabus. During the education each course is evaluated, and the course evaluations are the foundation for continued development. Prerequisites If you wish to enrol in the PLANET Europe programme, you should meet the following requirements: At least a bachelor degree (first cycle) in spatially oriented social science disciplines such as spatial planning, human or economic geography, environmental planning, or other relevant social sciences.
