Master in Graphic Information Design and Media Branding

IED – Istituto Europeo di Design Barcelona
Campus Full time 6 months January 2017 Spain Barcelona

The Masters Course in Graphic Information Design and Media Branding intends to tackle the changes in reading methods brought about by the emergence of new platforms and devices and by new reading and writing habits. [+]

Masters in Arts in Barcelona in Spain. THIS PROGRAM IS TAUGHT IN SPANISH In today's scenario, designers are faced with a major challenge brought on by the need to quickly and easily understand excessive amounts of information. In addition to growing quantities of data and shorter processing times comes a constant pursuit for new devices, maps and codes. The Masters Course in Graphic Information Design and Media Branding intends to tackle the changes in reading methods brought about by the emergence of new platforms and devices and by new reading and writing habits. The course aims to explore new paths so as to conceive visual communication strategies with which to render content (information) in a clearer, more efficient and more attractive way on different platforms. The practical possibilities this masters course offers are so vast and (happily) undefined that Graphic Information Design and Media Branding rises as a tool with huge potential for use in today's world. With this in mind, the end-of-masters project is geared towards a TV channel and the multimedia devices that make up its content and branding. More and more companies and institutions are creating specific Graphic Information Design departments with specialists in the field in order to enhance and improve communication and a better understanding of their products and services. For instance, Barack Obama's US Government Recovery Independent Advisory Panel added Eduard Tufte to its team so that he could apply Graphic Information Design to the prevention of fraud and bad investment of gains, as well as to promote transparency and clarity in the information issued and make the decision-making process easier for US citizens. Objectives The main goal is for students on the masters course to learn how to design visual communication elements containing large amounts of data, create layouts that make content easier to understand and apply those elements to TV and multimedia: the key is to transmit more with less. The priority is to build on the designer's skills and broaden their scope of application. The course focuses on information design bearing in mind conceptual, aesthetic and functional aspects, balancing all three in order to see it as the visual solution achieved after a process of analysing, understanding and organising content. Students focus their efforts on developing layouts that are capable of expressing: visual impact, non-sequential readings, and the designer's aim of drawing the readers' attention and simplifying their reading priorities. The masters programme intends to equip students with a variety of stylistic, technical and artistic resources to render information in a visually attractive and efficient way. The course is divided into three modules: Graphic Information Design and Media Branding. Easy reading means more reading. Methodology The masters programme combines theory and practice in preparation for a final project. Core subjects focus on two major aspects: Content of information: Students build on their skills to conduct research with the aim of gathering, analysing and organising data in order to then create specific content for a piece of communication or device. Visualisation of information: Exploring layout architecture in order to provide visual solutions for content, which is further enhanced by a good grasp of design resources. The knowledge acquired in the core subjects is reinforced with several specific workshops. These workshops speed up the learning process and break away from the routine of the core subjects by providing professional input from a variety of perspectives and through various channels and platforms, where information design plays a key role. The workshops are short and highly intensive, exploring specific topics in great depth. The final project is the focus point of the course, where everything the student has learnt on the masters is called into play. They have to be capable of applying their results in different channels. A good example is National Geographic: It started out as a magazine, then went on to become a TV channel and is now seen as a multimedia phenomenon (magazine, TV channel, web page, app and potentially a theme park, which in turn requires instructions, maps and signage), therefore posing a variety of challenges on several information transmission channels. Information is everywhere in every single field and discipline, and it needs to be organised and represented in a way that proves visually efficient and attractive. This makes graphic information design an essential tool that can adapt to any profession or field, but its success depends directly on the quality and quantity of content, and also on the visual solution created by the visual communicator. Skills acquired As explained in the general objectives, students will learn to: - Develop a method for researching and processing data in order to visualise information (research, theoretical elaboration and critical thinking applied to visual results). - Use writing signs (colour, form and typography) to intensify what the recipient sees and reads, drawing attention by using different equations to make information more visual. - Develop easily understandable layouts that contain large amounts of information and are efficient in terms of visual communication. - Provide a visual solution for vast quantities of information by organising content in an attractive, efficient, functional and aesthetic way using a variety of visual, technical and artistic resources. - Develop the ability to design information in the right setting, with a style that matches its context and is suitable for the target audience. - Apply Graphic Information Design to a TV channel and its multimedia platforms. Methodology The masters programme combines theory and practice in preparation for a final project. Core subjects focus on two major aspects: - Content of information: Students build on their skills to conduct research with the aim of gathering, analysing and organising data in order to then create specific content for a piece of communication or device. - Visualisation of information: Exploring layout architecture in order to provide visual solutions for content, which is further enhanced by a good grasp of design resources. Duration and frequency: Frequency: Monday to Friday Timetable: 6.30 p.m to 10.30 p.m * The educational planning for all IED Master courses is aligned with the criteria established by the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Master's in Design Research and Experimentation

Bau Design College of Barcelona
Campus Full time 1 year October 2017 Spain Barcelona

Design in the 21st century needs professionals with trans-disciplinary training, who are capable of working in collaborative processes, and who investigate and understand the world in which they live and the effects of their own activity. [+]

Masters in Arts in Barcelona in Spain. Master's in Design Research and Experimentation Design in the 21st century needs professionals with trans-disciplinary training, who are capable of working in collaborative processes, and who investigate and understand the world in which they live and the effects of their own activity. The increasing dependence on technological devices, the material dimension of life and the presence of objects with which we interact every day make contemporary design a privileged place from which to think and intervene in the world. For these reasons, this Master’s course is offered as an area for reflection about the very processes of design, but also as an area for experimentation, practice and critical intervention. The principal aim of the Master’s in Design Research and Experimentation is to provide conceptual tools and promote experimental practices for research in design and for a critical transformation of the socio-cultural environments in which we live. This Master’s course emerges as a commitment to the convergence of design as an area for the production of knowledge and research and design as a tool for intervention and social innovation with which to re-think and re-shape present and future lifestyles. The course combines kinds of awareness and methodologies that are peculiar to experimental and collaborative environments such as Medialabs, Fablabs or workshops for artistic creation with the research methodologies of the social sciences, studies in science and technology or cultural studies. In this way, the theoretical sessions are accompanied by practical workshops in the HANGAR production centre, where a working area is permanently available for the students. GENERAL AIMS OF THE TRAINING To train professionals capable of carrying out projects of research and experimentation in design resulting in critical analysis and the creation of objects and devices that can be used in the sustainable transformation of the socio-cultural environments in which we live. Those processes will be made possible by the research methods, the conceptual tools and the experimental practices which arise from the meeting of the social sciences, art and design. Taking its inspiration from free culture and open design, the kind of professional practice which is proposed is intended especially for contexts of work that are heterogeneousº, trans-disciplinary and collaborative. STUDY PLAN The course is composed of five modules which converge into a final project. Module I – The social life of things Module II – Critical and speculative design Module III – Creative practices and methods for research in design Module IV – Digital manufacture Module V - Final Project This Master’s degree course offers a trans-disciplinary tour through areas of teaching, research and theoretical/practical experimentation. The methodology includes classes of theory, lectures and thematic seminars, workshop practical sessions, experimentation stages, working sessions and the accompaniment and tutoring of projects. The course is run as a collaboration between the BAU, the University Centre of Design of Barcelona, and HANGAR, a centre for research and artistic production, together with various projects of research and experimentation in connection with design. Thus, in addition to the classrooms where the theory classes, seminars and lectures take place, areas are also available for practical work and for experimentation workshops. The students also have permanent access to a workshop area at HANGAR, for their personal work and projects. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The professional application of the knowledge and skills acquired during this Master’s Degree course can be orientated towards different areas, such as projects in laboratories for digital creation and manufacture (Fablabs, Makerspaces, Medialabs, etc.), work in design or architectural studios, cultural and artistic projects, projects of social diagnosis and intervention, or projects for social innovation. The course is also, and especially, intended for professionals who wish to work in research centres or with research groups which incorporate technical, social and humanistic knowledge, as they will be training designers, cultural managers, scientists and social interveners and transformers in the fields of knowledge offered by design as a tool for research and material intervention in the world.
