Master of Design
This program allows designers to sharpen their professional practice, and further their marketing, business and analytical skills at an advanced level. Graduates of the Master of Design will have enhanced, highly developed capabilities, which will place them at the forefront of their field of design practice. Through the completion of sustained design projects, students are required to demonstrate high-level planning, resourcing, implementation, completion and evaluation, culminating in an expert understanding of the professional design process. Is the Master of Achitecture for you?
The problem based learning and inclusive approach to studio teaching is one of the strengths of the program at Newcastle. The projects in the first year of the program focus on large-scale urban design, mixed-use and the detailed design of high-rise buildings. These design projects emphasise creative, social, cultural and ecological issues relating to urbanism and the built environment. The final year of the program provides you with the opportunity to develop their own elective project over the course of the year, applying in-depth research and resolution to a singular design problem. Within a creative and innovative learning environment the final exhibited project explores the complexities of making buildings for the future of the built environment. The comprehensive way that each stage of the architectural design process is articulated, critiqued and developed provides you with a portfolio of work that reflects the making of buildings in the real world. Projects undertaken by students often have real world clients and reflect the challenging environment that architects find themselves. The program is supported by a number of visiting adjunct professors and leading architects including Ric LePlastrier, Peter Stutchbury and Peter Davidson.... [-]

Designers have been using digital tools for many years; but most of these tools imitate traditional techniques such as drafting and layout. Increasingly, innovation in design is a result of using computers to do things that only computers can do.
This is digital design: a practice that engages deeply with digital processes, digital materials, and digital contexts.
Digital designers need to understand the fundamental elements of computing - data and algorithm - and work directly with them to create new processes, forms and practices.
The Master of Digital Design is a creative, studio-based program that will ground students in the fundamentals of digital design, introduce them to its principles and practice, and encourage them to apply new knowledge in their own specialist field.... [-]
