Master in Russian Cultural History and the Arts (MARCA)

European University at St. Petersburg
Campus Full time 1 - 1 year February 2017 Russia St. Petersburg

MARCA is a one-year Master’s degree program (60 Credits) offered to international students by the European University at Saint Petersburg. This program is for students interested in Russia. [+]

MARCA is a one-year Master’s degree program (60 Credits) offered to international students by the European University at Saint Petersburg. This program is for students interested in Russia. As we have learnt from students who have come to study at MARCA, the roots of your interest may be very different: Russian family origins or a love-story with a Russian (including such well known heart-breakers as Dostoevsky, Chekhov or Tchaikovsky), attraction to Russian culture or fear of Russian politics, pure intellectual curiosity or interest in energy politics. Your plans for the future might be vague or clear: business or law, marketing or government, journalism or academics. Whatever it might be, if Russia has anything to do with it, there is one sphere you must understand – Russian culture. When we say culture we do not mean only literature and the arts, but also religion, science, ideology, popular culture and practices of everyday life. If we accept a wide notion of culture we immediately realize that cultural distinctions are more important than political or economic ones. Major geopolitical changes result not only and not primarily from conflicts of economic interests, but rather from differences in civilizations. Intellectual innovation is the key to success in many fields. Conservators stay within borders and try to protect them, innovators trespass the frontiers and explore the territories of the others. It is much wiser to borrow from our neighbors than to keep away from them. A truly innovative program nowadays has to be multidisciplinary as well as interdisciplinary. Russian literature and Russian history are taught in many places, but an MA in Russian culture in a wide sense of the notion is hard to find. That’s why we created a unique program bringing together a team of leading specialists in different fields of Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet culture; our professors come from different departments of the European University at Saint-Petersburg and from other academic institutions. An important part of our educational process is practiced outside academe. The unique site of St. Petersburg – the ‘window onto Europe’ of the Russian Empire, the ‘cradle of three revolutions’, the cultural capital of modern Russia – integrates and visualizes major cultural paradigms and offers tools for their study. Libraries, museums, archives and architectural sites often substitute classrooms as teaching venues. Application procedure There are 3 easy steps to apply for one-year MA program at EUSP: Complete the Application form Send us all required documents Receive notification of acceptance/rejection Required documents: Scanned copy of your Passport Scanned copy of your Bachelor's degree diploma (or documentation that proves you will receive your diploma this year) Scanned copy of your Academic Transcript Your Statement of Purpose (about 500 words, including statement of goals, research interests and experiences, including the subject of your bachelor thesis) Two letters of recommendation from academics who are closely acquainted with your academic work Your Curriculum Vitae MARCA COURSE FORMAT lectures follow-up discussion sessions the language of instructions is English To complete the MA degree, the student must have a total of 60 Credits – 48 credits from courses and 12 Credits from an MA thesis. The student may choose to distribute these credits over the two semesters. That is, it is possible to take only 18 credits in the first semester and 30 credits in the second. Additionally, a student may audit as many classes as his or her schedule allows. Masters in Arts in Asia 2016/2017. Like the Department of Interior Design, the Department of Architecture belongs to the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. Despite some differences, much of the curriculum in these two departments follow similar lines which mostly run in parallel. This is so not only because the two disciplines are close relatives of each other, but also because it facilitates transfer of students from one discipline to the other if they wish to do so. The principal objective of this education is to teach students the important skills they would need in the future. Moreover, it is thought to be essential that students acquire a sincere love of this profession, if they are to be successful in the future. In this direction, besides obligatory practice in offices or the construction sites, students will be introduced the realities of professional life under dynamic circumstances – may this be within or outside the academic life. In summary, this program aims to educate students to be good designers. With their competence in foreign languages, their developed entrepreneurial capacities, and finally, a sound knowledge of architecture, each student will become a successful professional. [-]
