The two-year master's programme East Asian Economy and Society (EcoS) is a multidisciplinary programme dealing with contemporary societal, political and economic aspects of the East Asian region as a whole. It is offered at the Department of East Asian Studies of the University of Vienna in English language. For more information, see the EcoS Website. We regard East Asia as more than just the sum of countries in that region. Rather than offering "light-versions" of Chinese, Japanese or Korean Studies, we focus on current transnational and regional issues as well as on comparative approaches. Reflecting the common traditions as well as the growing interrelation between Northeast Asia (China, Japan and the two Koreas) and Southeast Asia, we expanded our regular activities in research and teaching to include the ASEAN countries. We believe that it is impossible to achieve a proper understanding of regional and country-specific issues without a solid foundation in established theories and methods of social science. Acquiring and utilising such methodology is therefore a core characteristic of our programme. However, even the best methodological skills are unlikely to produce optimal results if they are applied out of context. Historical and cultural tradition, customs, and values limit the number of actually available options and influence choices in East Asian societies just as anywhere else. It is therefore no coincidence that our programme is based at an area studies department. EcoS was first offered in the winter term 2008. The objective of the programme is to train experts in social science methods who apply their methodological skills to the East Asian region using a multidisciplinary approach. Accordingly, emphasis is put on transnational and regional issues and on comparative analyses. Students are equipped with academic research skills as well as the ability to apply the acquired knowledge in practice. Graduates have comprehensive knowledge of the economic, political and cultural characteristics of East Asian countries as well as their development. They are able to apply this knowledge to practically relevant issues. The study programme consists of five independent modules, totalling 120 ECTS. In module 1, the fundamentals of one East Asian language (Chinese, Japanese or Korean) are taught. Students who already hold a Bachelor's degree or a similar qualification in one of these languages are required to take courses in a language in which they do not hold such degree or qualification. In modules 2 and 3, students examine economic and political aspects of the East Asian regions within four core mandatory seminars on East Asia’s economic systems, economic development, political systems and international relations. In module 4, students are given a certain degree of flexibility when they study East Asian societies from a cultural-historical perspective, including history, religions and intercultural negotiation. In module 5, previously acquired skills are refreshed and applied to a research theme which leads to the MA thesis. This programme trains young scholars to conduct interdisciplinary research into the politics, economics, cultures, ethnicities, religions, and linguistics of Asia. It teaches not only the next generation of Asian Studies researchers, but also prepares students for professional careers involving Asia.

Using proper methods for carrying out research and analysis, students study the socio-economic, political, and culture-historic processes that shape countries in Asia. Special emphasis is placed on transnational relationships, interactions between Asia and the West, and the processes of globalization and social modernization.

Graduates enter doctoral programmes or begin their careers working for government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and international companies. As Asia’s role on the global stage grows, regional experts are in even greater demand across all international-related professions.... [-]

The National University of Singapore (NUS) and The Australian National University (ANU) are well known globally for teaching and research in Asia-Pacific studies. To promote further understanding of Asia and the Pacific, in particular Southeast Asia, the NUS and ANU have entered into an agreement to offer a Joint Masters Degree in Southeast Asian Studies with effect from the first semester of academic year 2004/2005. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at NUS through its Department of Southeast Asian Studies, and the College of Asia and the Pacific at ANU will administer the joint degree.

Like its core subject of study - the post-Soviet space - IMARES has changed and developed over the past 18 years. The program not only examines the past, but also interprets the most up to date events unfolding in this fascinating region. By combining analyses of past and present, our students gain a deep understanding of the political, economic, social, and cultural dynamics of the post-Soviet space. Why Study Eurasia? In its various forms (the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and the post-Soviet space), Eurasia has been the scene of some of the world’s most spectacular dramas during the last three centuries, including the rise and fall of empires and the successes and stagnations of strikingly different political and economic systems. It has followed a path from one of the world’s largest empires to the birth of nation states. It has been the battleground for the Napoleonic War, Civil War, and the horrors of two World Wars. During a turbulent history, the people of Eurasia experienced the contrasting forces of autocratic monarchy, socialism and fragile democracy, atheism and religious fundamentalism, and multiculturalism and ethnic conflict. Russia, Central Asia, the South Caucasus and Russia’s western neighbors have been testing the ground for political and economic theories, which left legacies that are still felt today. IMARES enables students to learn about the geopolitical space, the path of its development, the theory and the practice of different political and economic regimes throughout its history, and the ways in which these past experiences continue to influence developments today. The IMARES Program Through a combination of lectures, seminars, and self-study, our students learn, talk, and read about a variety of topics, including revolutions in Saint Petersburg, Islam in Russia, democracy in Kyrgyzstan, reforms in Georgia, nation-building in Ukraine, foreign policy dilemmas in Armenia, economics in Belarus, border control in Tajikistan or security issues in Azerbaijan. Students will also have the opportunity to experience Russia’s history and culture first hand, through a trip to the medieval Russian town of Veliky Novgorod. Extra-Curricular Benefits of IMARES In addition to its core academic content, the IMARES course offers extra-curricular benefits: the IMARES workshop series introduces expert guest speakers, with whom IMARES can discuss specialist topics. Previous speakers include businessmen from the Russian Forbes list, the President of the European Council, the former head of the Belarusian state TV and Radio, a variety of researchers and decision-makers from both Russia and abroad. Furthermore, all IMARES students are offered a course in Russian language, tailored to suit their ability, from beginner to advanced. Combined with the experience of living in Russia, the development of Russian language skills gives IMARES students a far greater understanding of contemporary Russia. Such a level of understanding can only be gained by actually spending time here in Russia, and experiencing the country for yourself. Your international passport validity period must be at least 6 months following the date you are planning to leave Russia on completing the program (e.g. if you intend to stay in Russia until June 30, 2017 your passport expiry date shouldn't be earlier than December 30, 2017) Scanned copy of your Bachelor's degree diploma (or documentation that proves you will receive your diploma this year) Scanned copy of your Academic Transcript Your Statement of Purpose (about 500 words, including statement of goals, research interests and experiences, including the subject of your bachelor thesis) Two letters of recommendation from academics who are closely acquainted with your academic work Your Curriculum Vitae IMARES COURSE FORMAT lectures follow-up discussion sessions the language of instructions is English To complete the MA degree, the student must have a total of 60 Credits – 48 credits from courses and 12 Credits from an MA thesis. The student may choose to distribute these credits over the two semesters. That is, it is possible to take only 18 credits in the first semester and 30 credits in the second. Additionally, a student may audit as many classes as his or her schedule allows. NOTE : Courses which have been selected by fewer than 3 students will not be taught during the given semester.
