Curriculum The two-year Master’s Degree Program in Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) exposes students to social, political, economic and financial dimensions of urban development and ethical dimensions of working as professionals. Students are trained to engage with scales from local project to city and region to global, through hands-on studio exercises, intense theory, individual capstone project, and field visits in India and abroad through summer winter school (SWS). The program offers the possibility of, but does not require, specializing in and obtaining a Major in any of the following: Land use Planning – This area will offer studios in land use planning at city, city-region and local level along with theory courses on land use planning, built-form and land markets. Housing – This area offers studios in housing strategy at city level and housing project planning along with courses in housing and land markets, housing & community development, housing project design & development, and housing finance. Environmental Planning – This area offers studios on preparing environmental impact assessment and environment management plan at city level along with courses on environmental resources, pollution, environmental economics and climate change. Infrastructure Planning – This area offers studios on preparing infrastructure plans at city level and infrastructure project development along with courses on infrastructure planning and infrastructure project development. Transportation Planning – This area offers studios on preparing comprehensive traffic and transportation plans at city level and transport project development along with courses on transportation and land use planning, transportation modelling and design of transportation systems. The first semester is the ‘foundation’ that prepares students to grapple with the idea of ‘urban’ and prepare a plan for development of a municipal ward. They are exposed to the theories of economic and social development and history of urban transformation. They learn the skills of quantitative, qualitative and spatial methods. The foundation semester gives them the breadth of the discipline. The second and third semesters are for delivering in-depth knowledge in one of the available specializations. In the second semester the students prepare plan of a city or a town, with emphasis on any one of the available specializations. Simultaneously, they learn skills and gain knowledge relevant to preparing the city level plans. In the third semester they prepare a plan for a region. An alternative option in the third semester is to prepare a detailed project report or area plan, which includes financial and governance proposals. During the fourth semester students are required to complete a capstone project – an individual but guided planning, research, grant writing or policy analysis project. Twice, in breaks between semesters, students are required to sign up for University’s Summer School and Winter School programs, which could include study tours to cities in India and abroad. To enable students to pursue individual interests only three quarters of the total academic workload is mandated to obtain the degree they have registered for. To complete the remaining one quarter, students choose courses from the many available electives. Admission and Prerequisites Applicants for the Masters of Planning program in the general category should have a minimum of 55% aggregate marks and those in the SC/ST/OBC categories should have a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in below mentioned degree programs from a recognised University / Institution: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Architecture/ Environmental Engineering/ Civil Engineering/ Planning/ Law Or Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Geography/ Economics/ Sociology/ Environmental Science/ Social Work /Development Studies/ Policy Studies/ Political Science International Entry Requirements CEPT’s guiding principal for International Admissions is to seek equivalence between International standards achieved and those of Indian home students. Salient Features The post graduate course is envisioned as a platform for carrying out various research projects and starting the doctoral research Programs in the future. The course finds its need in inculcating within the students, the ability to deal with the contemporary issues affecting architecture and anticipate the future directions in architecture and architectural design practice. It gives an opportunity to reground their design skills and urge for research by pursuing their understanding of architecture through the latest innovations in technology. The minimum duration of the Programs is 4 semesters but in any case not more than 8 semesters excluding the semesters withdrawn on medical grounds. The following norms will generally be followed in assigning credits for courses. One credit for each lecture / tutorial hour per week per semester. One credit for each design studio / dissertation / thesis session of two periods per week per semester. The curriculum of M.Arch. is so designed that the minimum prescribed credits required for the award of the degree is within the limits of 80 - 95. The medium of instruction, examination and the language of the project reports is English. ThesisWork Thesis shall be carried out under the supervision of a qualified teacher in the concerned department. A candidate may, however, in certain cases, be permitted to work on the project in an Industrial / Research Organization, based on the recommendations of HOD, with the approval of the Head of the Institution. In such cases, the thesis shall be jointly supervised by a supervisor of the department and an expert from the organization and the student shall be instructed to meet the supervisor periodically and to attend the review committee meetings for evaluating the progress. The thesis shall be pursued for a minimum of 15 weeks during the final semester. Every candidate doing M.Arch. shall be encouraged to send a paper for publication in a Journal or a Conference based on his/her thesis work.
