Master in Architecture and Urban Planning in Mediterranean Environment As of the academic year 2013/2014 the University of Split will be providing a new graduate course of study of architecture in the English language, granting the students the degree of Master of science in Architecture and Urban Planning in Mediterranean Environment. The university study of architecture at the University of Split has existed since 2003, in the meantime winning international recognition, establishing an extensive collaboration with a number of universities in Europe (Zürich, Winterthur, Aachen, Madrid, etc) and Japan (Tokyo). It has become a distinguished study programme of architecture due to the excellent skills in individual disciplines, such as architectural design, urban planning and heritage preservation, as well as to the successful endeavour of combining them into multidisciplinary competences. The historical core of Split, dominated by the renowned Diocletian's Palace, has been as an unique historical site in its entirety included in the cultural heritage under the protection of UNESCO. Design and planning tasks motivate the students to face the problems of architectural practice in the sensitive natural coastal environment, as well as the inherited historical context and the authority of the spatial criteria and requirements. Program Description Theoretical and multidisciplinary supports are ensured by a series of modules in which diverse factors participate in this creative process. The product of creativity, also applied to a theme as old as the living, can become a software that helps us orient ourselves or an interface to manage a home automation application but in any case it must be time to take advantage of new knowledge to improve the welfare and meet the need for comfort. It seems clear, even from this brief introduction, that the master is not intended only to transfer a pre-established knowledge and consolidated experience as the use of techniques, materials typical of other fields such as literature, chemistry, neurosciences, cinema, computer science. Finally we want to give space to the themes typical of professional practice and management of the project and to the team of employees that the customer, considered part of the quality of work of the designer. In addition to the conscience of the economics of the project, students IAAD must acquire the ability to do marketing of themselves - essential to present and understand their work and their skills. During the course, great importance is given to presentations and design contest: students are encouraged to make presentations of their work and supported to participate in national and international contests: the projects must not only meet the designers, but they must be able to be appreciated and understood by juries of experts and the public. Masters in Urban Design in Europe 2016/2017. Master in Urban Studies The two-year Master’s program in Urban Studies combines rigorous academic research with intensive field-work. The program is situated at the trans-disciplinary crossroad of critical urban studies, urbanism and urban planning, architecture theory, sociology and urban ethnography. Our students have previous academic background in architecture and/or humanities. Integrating critical interrogation and experimental practice, the program has a triple focus on social uses, spatial programs and urban forms. The form of assignments includes term-long research studios, intensive workshops, lectures, seminars, and field trips. The distinctive mark of the Master in Urban Studies is its reliance on theoretically informed action in the field. We take students’ effort seriously: the program engages ‘real’ actors and create opportunities for public presentation, discussion and publishing of best works. Contemporary urban situation is studied as a multifaceted phenomenon, which cannot be understood from a single disciplinary perspective. The program leads students to have an insight in the dynamics of institutions, actors, and conflicts that shape today’s cities. The mission of the English-speaking Master’s program in Urban Studies is to understand and analyse contemporary urban problems and act upon these problems in terms of design, policy, activism, and research. Intensive urban fieldwork is complemented by regular consultations with teachers. History of the program Combining influences from typomorphological approach of Aldo Rossi and conceptual urbanism of Rem Koolhaas’ OMA, the program was established by professor Jan Verwijnen in early 2000s. From the start, the Urban Studies curriculum linked architecture to philosophy, urban history, critical economic theory, cultural studies and knowledge of new planning tools. The driving idea was to re-ground architecture and urbanism, so that projects – defined as “urban interventions” – would grow from contemporary urban phenomena, not from ossified professional practices or historical models. The program was characterised by an intense interest in everyday life, its spatial context and new conceptualisations of space as a process. The first Urban Studies Days were organised in 2004. The aim was to bring in high-level international experts and to discuss Tallinn’s planning and urban development in the spirit of Berlin’s Stadtforum. Later the event was renamed Urban and Landscape Days, and it is organised annually in April or May. In 2005, Panu Lehtovuori took the responsibility in 2005 to run the program and develop the curriculum. Since autumn 2012, the program has been led by Dr. Maros Krivy. STUDIES The Master’s program in Urban Studies provides the students with: theoretical ground for understanding urban history and contemporary urban development, practical research and methodological skills for analysing urban situations in a rich, comprehensive and interdisciplinary way, design skills engaging the student in work on urban and spatial planning, international and comparative perspective. Pedagogically, the curriculum consists of: lectures courses, in which key debates in contemporary urban studies an architectural theory is presented, reading seminars, where students are engaged in critical discussion of these debates, semester-long research studios, the core element of the program, in which students analyse, engage and propose solutions to ‘real’ urban situations, utilising wide range of planning (scenario planning, interventions) and academic (interviews, observation, archival research) methods, seminaries held by invited lecturers, who provide expert knowledge on multiple fields central to the urban question (geography, history, art history, detailed planning, software tools), annually changing workshops and courses on topical themes, which are shared between first and second year MA students, helping the two groups to integrate. The basic structure of the Master’s program is as follows: 1st year, autumn term: urban and architectural theory, typomorphology studio 1st year, spring term: scenario-planning studio 2nd year, autumn term: urban research studio, urban planning studio (held in collaboration with students of Architecture program) 2nd year, spring term: Master’s thesis. ADMISSIONS Depending on their background discipline, prospective students have an outstanding portfolio of either design or written work (realised or published work is not required, but it is an advantage) in a field relevant to the discipline of Urban Studies (architecture, planning, social sciences, art history, etc.). Students’ strong interest in urban phenomena, manifested in their previous work at the level of design skills and/or research experience is decisive. Crucially, prospective students are able to manifest that they are willing and capable to integrate these two forms of urban knowledge in their Master’s studies. Prospective students are able to formulate original questions, problems and approaches that they would like to pursue during the Master’s studies. Fluent command of English language is required. The process of selecting prospective students has two rounds. In the first round, the applicants are assessed based on the submitted portfolio of written and/or design work and the CV. The theoretical manifests have an apparently relative incidence ―or, at the very least, vague― on avant-grade architecture and other design fields. It seems to be nourishing by the effects caused by an economical and social system permanently growing, by the viral and inalienable emergence of a digital environment, and by a growing concern on sustainability and energy efficiency for everything we should produce from now. These new world-wide emerging and disappearing markets and the transformation of the social fabric, together with the new tools that allow the return to architectural practice with renewed possibilities to project. They all allow us to develop projects from a “thinking as experimenting” methodology, so we return to the deleuzian concept of “thinking as doing”. That’s why, once Term 1 and Term 2 of the Master’s Degree in Advanced Design and Digital Architecture ―almost exclusively focused on research and new design methodologies exploration― have finished, we suggest Term 3, where we dedicate our efforts on the consolidation of the theoretical part by rigorously elaborating a document (dissertation). The student will count on the help of high knowledge doctors and teachers in advertisement. At the same time, we suggest the design and building of a pavilion that allows the approach of every process carried out in Term 1 and Term 2 to an architectural object scaled 1:1. Goals GOAL 1: DISSERTATION After finishing the 12 month of research and experimental design at ADDA (Term 1 and Term 2), the Mention in Research ( Term 3 ) allows the student to develop a structured dissertation of the entire contents, both of research and design, generated previously throughout the course. The course will help the students to set up properly the theoretical fundaments of the new design strategies in architecture, that have been applied during the previous 12 months, engaging with the logic of emergence applied to design, genetic theories, and new paradigms of digital environment. This course will be a big opportunity to students to set up a very well structured topic in case of being interested on the development of their PhD. GOAL 2: ADDA GROUP RESPONSIVE PAVILION The target is to design and the manufacture of a true scale prototype every year with the students of the Mention in Research. Therefore, intensive workshop at the first week of the course will define the bases for the material system to be developed. Later during the rest of the 5 months all group of students will develop the design of a physical system (phenotype) and the design of a digital process (genotype).
