The Architecture and Building Engineer shows creativity and realism by taking into account contemporary socio-economic challenges. At the end of the five-year programme, his/her knowledge permits to tackle some problems of the society and to play a responsible role.
Profile of the programme
The training deals with a strong creative spirit, necessary to the role of architecture, as well as to a deep knowledge of the engineering techniques. These two complementary aspects are commonly developed along the training and they are reinforced by several university exchanges (ERASMUS, TIME, in collaboration with high schools, universities or industries). Their creativity is highlighted through architecture projects, done individually or collectively.
The main subjects of the curriculum in Architecture and Building engineering lead to a multipurpose profession :
Human science: to adapt the building to the cultural and social environment : history of the architecture, sociology, economy, legislation.
Architectural act: to develop aesthetic and creativity: urbanism, architectural arrangement, restoration, industrial design.
Engineering and structural design to guarantee stability and security of the constructions : knowledge of building materials (steel, concrete, wood, masonry), structural verifications according to European standards, fire engineering, techniques of construction and restoration, planning, pathologies, ...
Special techniques and environmental aspects, necessary for comfortable and reliable use: ventilation, air cooling, thermal insulation.
Two optional programmes are suggested. They give the possibility to improve some topics related to research fields previously studied for several years. The optional programme concerns the energy saving in buildings and the restoration of historical buildings.
Sustainable energy use in buildings – UDEBat In the early seventies, the industries began to deal with saving energy, but we have to say that the building industry took a long time to react with, sometimes, poor solutions. Today, it is common to analyse the use of the energy according its effects on people and on the environment.
For several years now, the FPMS energy cluster has been dealing with sustainable use of energy in buildings. It concerns the use of primary energy, the distribution of heat, venting, air-conditioning and heat stock possibilities.
Restoration Management The restoration of old buildings covers different fields which regroup a certain amount of historical, architectural, technical and scientific knowledge. With almost forty years of experience within several laboratories of the Faculty, these modules give further information to the restoration lectures.
Sanitary studies and specific diagnostics applied to the field of restoration, are well represented in the lectures. They concern the description of new techniques for pathology analysis, as well as for preservation and restoration.

By the end of this specific course programme, the students will be able to:
Master urban and architectural design for building projects (remodelling of a neighborhood, restoration and renovation, collective and individual housing);
Design structures according to their stability and serviceability;
Apply the fundamental notions to solve problems in the fields of indoor and outdoor lighting, of sound transmission and reverberation, of energetic performance of buildings;
For the optional programme “Restoration Management”,
Master the disciplines and the methods used during the restoration of historical buildings;
For the optional programme “Sustainable energy use in buildings”,
Master the disciplines and the methods dealing with sustainable energy used in buildings;
Today, the Architecture and Building Engineer plays a main role in the field of urban design. The multipurpose training leads to several types of professional careers. The main role of Architecture and Building Engineers is to deal with the design and the construction of buildings such as family homes, large residential complexes, office buildings, exhibition halls or leisure centers. Moreover, their skills are extended to civil engineering tasks such as draining, road networks, foundations, or footbridge. He or she offers their competence as a consulting engineer, as a freelance or in a design office, in an architecture office, in a construction company or in the public administration.
In his or her professional activities, the Architecture and Building Engineer takes care of the user’s comfort but also of their environment by proposing innovative solutions with regards to the architecture of the building: lighting, acoustic, air conditioning, heating and ventilation.
Their artistic sensitivity and their architectural culture allow to deal with urban and rural renovations, rehabilitations of old buildings and to propose well adapted solutions for town and country planning works.
As for the architects, a two-year mandatory internship is required in order to lead architectural projects, on their own behalf.
Access to further studies
The Master in Architecture and Building Engineering can lead to postgraduate studies in order to specialize, do further training or conduct a PhD thesis.
