There is growing awareness and practice of considering human needs and interactions in rural development and the programme addresses the identified need for improved capacity in project design, particularly in research to test the impact of development interventions. The programme comprises in-depth investigation of rural change with study of core concepts and their application as well as a research methods core providing advanced training in social science methodologies and particular applications of these approaches. Theoretical knowledge and practical skills for:

breeding selected horticultural crops, seed production and processing of vegetables and flowers, seed biology, routine and advanced methods of seed quality tests  use of seeds in other areas of Horticulture, seed marketing and company management.

 ABOUT THE COURSE The course lasts 3 semesters (1.5 year) and costs 3600 Euro. The course comprises 830 hours of lectures, classes, seminars, field trips and seed company visits. The studies, besides intellectual adventure, give you an excellent chance to develop your career and visit Europe. Carried out since 1995 and resulted in almost 80 graduates, of which 6 had continued their careers in PhD studies, they provide you with good bases for further promotion in your professional life. The course includes selecting a MSc research project following the student’s individual interests. It is carried out at various departments of our University, Institutes of Polish Academy of Sciences (for Plant Genetics and Dendrology), Department of Botany of the University of Adam Mickiewicz and other research units. Some MSc research projects are also carried out in the Polish plant breeding and seed production seed companies. The course’s curriculum and individual syllabi have been regularly updated according to suggestion from the seed industry. The Master of Agriculture is normally undertaken after completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Agriculture. It consists of either a full thesis, or two appropriate postgraduate courses and a Supervised Research Project.

Master of Science in AgricultureThe Master of Science program in agriculture is designed to further develop the technical knowledge and professional training necessary for those preparing for occupations in agriculture and for more advanced graduate studies. The emphasis is on current knowledge and how it may be adapted to future problems of all those engaged in producing, processing, and marketing agricultural products.

This program is implemented by selecting one of the three following options:

Option One: Thesis    In addition to 32 hours of course work, students who pursue this option will be required to write a thesis and must be actively engaged in an acceptable research program. Students must have a score of at least 300 on both the verbal portion and quantitative portions of the GRE before they will be admitted to candidacy.    Students with a GRE score less than 300 verbal or quantitative can petition the graduate faculty of the Department of Agriculture for waiver of the GRE requirement.    The department graduate advisor, together with each student pursuing this option, will appoint an advisory committee consisting of a thesis advisor, who will direct the research of the student, a second faculty member from agriculture, and a faculty member from a field related to the student's program. The advisory committee will assist the student in planning the research program and will conduct an oral examination of the student over the thesis upon completion of the student's research project. The ever increasing demand for organically produced foods requires new and different production systems. In order to create such sustainable organic production systems a fresh scientific approach is needed.
