Program Description

Master's Degree Programme in Bioinformatics, M.Sc.

University of Tampere

Apply on 14 December 2015 - 27 January 2016

  • Coordinating school: BioMediTech
  • Duration: two academic years
  • Extent: 120 credits/ECTS credits
  • Programme period: autumn semester 2016 - spring semester 2018
  • Specialization: bioinformatics

The M.Sc. Programme in Bioinformatics offers you in-depth knowledge and hands-on skills from where biology and computational science meet.

Bioinformatics applies methods of computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, and statistics to biological data from e.g. DNA, RNA or proteins. Bioinformatics is needed in modern biotechnological, biological and biomedical research and development, especially when dealing with large data sets produced by current high-throughput measurement techniques.

The degree provides you with skills you can utilize as a bioinformatician, biostatistician or biological data analyst and qualifies you to work in industry or continue your studies at the doctoral level.

The MSc Programme in Bioinformatics is taught entirely in English, and it is two years in duration, with an extent of 120 ECTS credits. The curriculum consists of general studies, advanced studies and free choice studies. A special module of methodological studies including computer science, mathematics and biology and a module with in-depth focus on the methods and applications of bioinformatics are included in the advanced studies. In addition, the students write a Master's thesis comprising 40 ECTS.

Admission criteria for admission in 2016

Intake in the application round 2016-2017 is 0-20 students.

Application procedure

Applications are to be submitted through the Studyinfo.fi service, where the electronic application form is available during the application period. All applications are pre-processed by the centralized University Admissions Finland (UAF) service. Applicants must be able to support their application with enclosures related to their educational background, language skills, and other qualifications and merits. The required enclosures must reach UAF by post by 10.2.2016.

Applicants to Finnish higher education institutions who are applying based on a qualification completed outside the EU/EEA –area or Switzerland will be required to pay an application fee of 100 €. The collection of the application fee is independent of the home country and nationality of the applicant. The fee will be collected as a part of the application process. The application fee is valid for one application period, and it covers all the applications that you make for study programmes that begin in the same semester.

The School may arrange interviews to assess the most qualified applicants. The interviews are conducted by telephone or as a video-interview in March-April. The interviewees will be contacted using the contact details provided by the applicant on the application form. The purpose of the individual interview in English is to assess the applicant's motivation, language skills and her/his ability to discuss the content areas of the programme.

Applicants who have not yet finished their BSc degree may be selected conditionally. In that case they need to present an official copy of the degree certificate and, if needed, an official translation. These documents must be submitted before 29 July 2016, otherwise the conditional acceptance expires.

Eligibility

Students who have a good knowledge of English for academic purposes are eligible to apply if they have at least:

a) A university-level B.Sc. degree in an applicable field, equivalent to a Finnish B.Sc. degree (180 ECTS, at least 3 years of full time study).

b) A B.Sc. degree from a university of Applied Sciences (polytechnic) in an applicable field considered to be sufficient for Master's degree studies when combined with possible work experience and/or additional studies.

If the applicant has a degree in which the relevant studies in the applicable fields (biosciences and information technology) are insufficient, the university may require that the student performs additional studies (max. 60 credits) in addition to the Master's degree studies. The required amount and content of possible additional studies is decided for each student individually.

Applicable fields of the prior studies are biosciences and information technology, or other relevant fields of study where sufficient knowledge of information technology and/or biosciences is achieved for studying in the Master's Degree Programme in Bioinformatics.

The decision for admission is based on the relevance of the earlier awarded degree(s); the amount, relevance and grades of the courses included in the degree and on the demonstrated English language competence (see Language requirements). Fulfilling the above admissions criteria does not guarantee selection but the applicants are ranked according to their experience, qualifications and other criteria.

The applicant shall prove his/her educational background by submitting officially attested copies of certificates by the application deadline. If selected, upon arrival in Tampere, the accepted student will have to show his/her original educational documents at the Admissions Office of the University of Tampere in order to be able to register at the university.

Language requirements

Applicants must submit evidence on a good command of English for academic purposes. There are two ways of indicating English language proficiency; language tests and previous studies.

1. Previous studies

The following studies are accepted as proof of a good command of English:

  • A Bachelor's degree in English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States, excluding online degrees, with the applicant having stayed in the respective country when studying for the Bachelor's degree.
  • Secondary education in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States.
  • A completed foreign language course required in all Bachelor’s degrees in Finnish universities in the English language (excluding degrees completed in Universities of Applied Sciences, AMK).
  • A right to study towards a degree in one of the international Master’s degree programmes offered by the University of Tampere

2. Language tests

We accept the following tests as a proof of a good command of English:

  • TOEFL, Test of English as a Foreign Language; 90/Internet-based, 575/paper-based. Please note: scores from "TOEFL ITP/institutional testing programme" are not accepted.
  • IELTS (Academic), International English Language Testing System; 6.5 with no individual score below 5.5
  • PTE (Academic), Pearson’s Test of Academic English; 62

Please note that the language test score must be valid throughout the application period. This means that if the language test expires even 1 day before the application deadline, the applicant must take a new language test. Language test results are valid for two years.

We advise all 2016 applicants needing an international language test score to book for one well in advance, as test dates are filling up fast in the autumn and it may take several weeks for the test result to reach University Admissions Finland.

Announcement of results and rectification procedure

Admissions results will be announced by 29 April, 2016. All applicants will be informed about the admissions results by email and postal mail.

An applicant who is dissatisfied with the student admission decision may make a written appeal to the Board of the BioMediTech. A signed appeal addressed to the board of the school must reach the University Registry within 14 days of the official publication of the results. The appeal should include full written details of the reason and grounds for the complaint. The postal address is: University Registry (Kirjaamo), FI-33014 University of Tampere, Finland. Detailed instructions and deadlines will be notified by email to all rejected applicants after the publication of the student selection results.
