Master of Science in Strategy - M. Sc. Degree in Economics and Business Administration

Aalto University

The Master’s Programme in Strategy provides the participants with the skills and knowledge required for a successful career in management consulting, business development or general management positions.

This flexible programme develops the skills to diagnose business problems and to conceive and implement new strategic initiatives in business contexts ranging from multinational corporations to start-ups. The unique programme is designed to combine the strengths of the Aalto University School of Business and the Department of Industrial Engineering at the Aalto University School of Science, bringing the broadest range of elective courses.

The programme contents have been developed in close collaboration with the leading consulting companies to provide a learning experience that combines the most relevant theoretical knowledge with practical experience of real-life business development tasks.

Study experience

The programme consists of several mandatory core modules that provide participants with the newest knowledge on strategy formulation and implementation as well as the required methodological skills. The majority of the studies consist of elective courses, which can be chosen from the combined offering of the Aalto University’s Schools of Business and Science. Elective courses include topics such as innovation and technology management, international business, business venturing, marketing management, and managerial economics.

At the heart of the programme lies a student-focused learning method, which emphasizes personal development through reflection, practical exercises, experience, and learning by doing. Courses draw on the university’s long-standing contacts with the Finnish and international companies as well as alumni to offer a blend of theoretical and conceptual knowledge through real-life examples and business insights. The day-to-day challenges of leading organisations, as well as company excursions, case studies, and assignments are essential parts of learning.

Courses combine true and tested learning methods, such as case studies, group projects, and interactive seminar sessions with new innovative methods such as simulation games and debates.

Learning outcomes

The goal of the Strategy programme is to develop business professionals who are able to succeed in the complex business environment. This requires not only robust competence in business but also intercultural, interpersonal, behavioral, and leadership skills combined with excellent international connections.

  • Ability to craft and evaluate strategic initiatives

2.People and leadership

  • Ability to understand and participate in strategy processes

3.Organization and capabilities

4.Business environment, competition, and markets

  • Analysis of industries and business ecosystems
  • Competitor analysis and marketing strategy

Career prospects

Our programme is designed to equip our graduates with the essential set of skills and competencies required to begin a career in business development, business intelligence, and consulting. These entry-level jobs provide a natural platform for career development into general management or a domain specialist. Our programme allows proactive and energetic individuals to develop into business professionals capable of conceiving and implementing valuable change in the organizations they work at.

A large share of our alumni work in business consulting, including companies such as McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, Deloitte, and Accenture. Several of our graduates work in large multinationals, such as Kone, while yet others work in young growth companies both in Finland and abroad.
