Postgraduate study has become increasingly important to develop your career, specialise in a particular field, and to gain a qualification that can enhance your employment prospects and professional development. This suite of programmes aims to create specialists capable of understanding inter-related issues of Quantity Surveying and Sustainability. The programme will enable the learner to specialise in one of three aspects of Quantity Surveying, namely, sustainable public building, sustainable civil engineering and sustainable mechanical & electrical engineering. Each programme create a progression opportunity, relevant professional institute membership and/or experiential learning gained from working within the built environment.

The programme focus can be summarised as:

‘the development of the learner as a post-graduate with a specialist understanding and competency in the theory, concepts and methodologies relating to the sustainability, technology, metrics, value, legal frameworks and management of complex built assets.’

The programme learning outcomes can be summarised as:

‘the acquisition by the quantity surveying post-graduate of a specialist understanding and competency in the theory, concepts and methodologies relating to the sustainability, technology, metrics, value, legal frameworks and management of complex built assets.’

The post-graduate will have a specialist knowledge and competency of quantity surveying applicable to one of the following built environment sectors:

(i) Public Sector Building

(ii) Civil Engineering

(iii) Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

Programme Aims

The aim of this programme is to enable learners to acquire a highly practical level 9 qualification in quantity surveying. The programme will enable the learner to specialise in one of three aspects of Quantity Surveying, namely, public sector building, civil engineering and mechanical & electrical engineering. The programme will create a progression opportunity for level 8 undergraduates and other learners with a mix of academic qualifications, relevant professional institute membership and experiential learning gained from working within the built environment.

Entry Requirement

  1. A primary degree in a built environment programme with a minimum award of Second Class Honour Grade 2. or

  2. An appropriate professional built environment qualification (ie. Chartered membership of the SCS, EI, CIOB etc.) and at least 2 years relevant professional experience/responsibility. or

  3. A primary degree and at least 5 years relevant professional responsibility and experience. or

  4. Special Case Registrations: Prospective participants who do not meet the entry requirements for the programme detailed above, but who may qualify for admission by meeting certain other equivalent criteria, should apply to the Lifelong Learning Office for consideration. Note: An interview may form part of the selection process for all application routes.
