Globalisation and technological change are rapidly transforming the business world. Marketing is an increasingly important discipline in today's economic climate. Trends in current marketing management include a growing emphasis on customer satisfaction, services marketing, development of the China market and business-to-business marketing.

The MSc in Marketing Management addresses the above issues, aimed primarily at those who have professional or technical qualifications, but need to broaden their knowledge and skills in the area of marketing management. It covers a range of specialist marketing issues in areas such as online consumer market analysis, managerial issues in marketing, analytic methods for market research and global marketing strategy.

The programme focuses on the application of relevant marketing theory and practiceto addressing the opportunities and problems faced by marketing practitioners in Hong Kong and Mainland China. The goal is to equip future business leaders with sound knowledge and skills in marketing and related areas.

The Postgraduate Diploma Route

Students may, on completion of 7 subjects, opt for the Postgraduate Diploma if they are unable to complete the full programme.

Programme Details

To qualify for the MSc degree, students must obtain 31 credits as follows:

  • 5 Compulsory Subjects (3 credits each)
  • 5 Elective Subjects (3 credits each)
  • 1 Ethics Subjects (1 credit)
    OR
  • 5 Compulsory Subjects (3 credits each)
  • 1 Elective Subject (3 credits)
  • 1 Ethics Subject (1 credits)
  • the subject Marketing Research (3 credits) and a Dissertation (Dissertation is equivalent to 9 credits)

The Compulsory Subjects comprise strategic and functional marketing modules and are designed to provide students with the conceptual and analytical foundations in marketing. The Elective Subjectsprovide the opportunity for students to learn about applied marketing topics and explore leading-edge marketing practices and issues.

Mode of Study and Duration

Mode of study: Mixed-mode

Students can pursue their studies in either a full-time study load (taking 9 credits or more in a semester) or a part-time study load (taking less than 9 credits in a semester).

Depending on their study pace, students should normally be able to complete the programme full-time in 1.5 years and part-time in 2 to 3 years with a maximum study period of 6 years. Students will be required to attend more classes in the evening if they choose the full-time option and the duration will be subject to class quota availability.

The programme offers a structured progression pattern. However, with the credit-based system, the programme gives students the flexibility to complete the programme within 6 years, depending on the number of subjects a student enrols in for each semester.

Classes are normally scheduled on weekday evenings in two semesters within an academic year. Each subject requires 42 contact hours over a teaching semester, with one 3-hour class per week.

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the programme, you should have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent academic/professional qualifications. Thereis no restriction on your previous background – business, engineering, social sciences, natural sciences, humanities, law and others are all acceptable.

Priority will be given to those with relevant working experience.
