Master of Science in Global Marketing Management


The Master of Science in Global Marketing Management (MScGMM) is a joint award taught postgraduate programme offered by the Department of Marketing, HKBU and the Management School of the University of Sheffield (the United Kingdom) on a one year full-time study basis.


The programme is designed for relatively recent graduates in any discipline with an interest in working in the marketing function for multinational organizations. It will also benefit those in general and line management, who seek a thorough education in the principles and practice of global marketing management. Applicants from all countries will be considered.

Non-Hong Kong graduates of the programme can apply to stay and work in Hong Kong for 12 months after graduation.

Enrolment on the programme will automatically allow you to become an Affiliate member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). Completion of the programme gives you a further option of becoming a Chartered Marketer after three years work experience and an additional 35 hours of personal development.

By spending the first semester in the UK and the second semester in Hong Kong, students can experience firsthand the east and the west in one single year through global exposure.

Joint Award

Hong Kong's first joint Master’s degree in Global Marketing Management, leading to a single master degree to be issued jointly by Hong Kong Baptist University and the University of Sheffield.

The Programme aims to:

  1. provide students with the knowledge and skills appropriate to commence an international career associated with marketing management.

  2. develop students’ understanding of marketing theories and practices associated with global organizations in order to enable them to identify and critically evaluate the strategies adopted in meeting the challenges imposed by changing social, political and economic environments.

  3. develop students’ understanding of the impact of contextual forces acting on businesses in the marketing discipline.

  4. develop students’ understanding of and ability to conduct rigorous international related market research through independent study, leading to the submission of a dissertation.

  5. provide students with a unique international opportunity to experience high quality learning and teaching that will be delivered across two research-led universities i.e., University of Sheffield and HKBU, where they will interact with faculty and students from different cultures.

International Accreditation

Admission Requirements

  1. You will need a good degree in any subject (An upper second class (2:1) or higher; or equivalent) or approved professional qualification combined with a desire to learn about the principles and practices of marketing. You do not need prior marketing or management experience.

  2. English language requirements If you are a national (or university graduates) of a majority native English speaking country, you do not need to complete a specific English language qualification. List of majority native English speaking countries:

Other than students from native English speaking countries, an English language qualification is required: IELTS is our preferred test of language. You need an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent, with at least 6 in all the component tests. If you are unable to sit the IELTS, you should take TOEFL . If you take TOEFL, please note that the internet-based test (IBT) is the only TOEFL qualification that we accept.

There are no specific application deadlines for this programme. However you should be aware of the programme start date (i.e late September) and give yourself plenty of time in which to apply, particularly if you are a non-UK applicant who needs to arrange a student visa.

You may submit an application as early as September (for admission in September the next year) and as late as three months before the programme start date.

Your application is in two parts: Part 1: Your Details; and Part 2: Course Applications. You have to complete Part 1 before you can move on to Part 2.

When you are on the Sheffield's online application system, you will find "Course Selection" in Part 2. Please select "Faculty of Social Sciences" for faculty and "Management School" for department, then select "full time" courses and you will find "Global Marketing Management" on the list.

Offer Types

You will get a reply from the University of Sheffield regarding your application within 4 weeks in a normal case. If an offer is made, it will be either Conditional or Unconditional.

A Conditional offer means that there are requirements that you need to meet before you can start the course, for example a certain English language score, or a minimum grade in your current studies.

An Unconditional offer means that there are no further requirements that you need to meet.

If you have not met the English language requirements at the time of application and there is no other reason for rejection, you will get a conditional offer. Postgraduate students who wish to join Sheffield’s programmes often find that they get a 'conditional offer' on English language requirements. To change their offer to 'unconditional', they need to improve their English language.

The University of Sheffield offers the opportunity to study English on a course taught with a business and management perspective. These pre-sessional courses are provided by the TUOS English Language and Teaching Centre (ELTC). It is important to note that candidates who have a conditional offer will need to pass the final test at the required level before you could start the MScGMM programme.

Tuition Fee

Semester one fees to be paid to the University of Sheffield in pounds (UK/EU students GBP 4,500; International students GBP 8,250) and semester two fees to be paid to HKBU in Hong Kong dollars (HK$97,500; HKBU/SCE/UIC students and alumni HK$87,500 under Life-long Learning Reward Scheme).

Life-long Learning Reward

Students and alumni of HKBU, HKBU-SCE and UIC are entitled to a Life-Long Learning Reward of HKD10,000 (reduction in fee charged in semester 2) if they choose to remain at the University to study for this programme. This reward is offered by the Department of Marketing, HKBU.


Hong Kong Baptist University

Up to four scholarships ranging from HK$5,000-HK$10,000 each will be granted to students with outstanding academic performance at the end of the programme. Students do not need to apply for the scholarship under this merit-based scholarships scheme.

The University of Sheffield

There are a number of scholarships ranging from £1,000-£5,000 which students may be eligible for.

Regarding Sheffield's scholarships, all applicants who have been made a conditional or unconditional offer will be sent an email inviting them to apply for the relevant scholarship. The email will outline all scholarships that the applicant is eligible to apply for.
