The program is a research driven Master’s programme, combining a broad foundation in natural sciences with state-of-the-art knowledge of biological and environmental processes. The primary focus of the programme will be on the aquatic environment with an aim to develop expertise in the understanding and analysis of simple through to complex environmental problems.

The degree will be awarded in Biology, and the environmental profile of this programme will be specified in your degree certificate.

Programme structure


During the first year, the coursework will ensure that the student acquires a wide range of skills relevant to environmental biology. During the second year, the primary emphasis is research, the result of which will be an individual MSc thesis.

Future and career


With a degree in Environmental biology from the University of Southern Denmark, you will gain a broad scientific education which will enable you to interpret and understand a number of interdisciplinary subjects. This makes you an interesting prospect to a variety of employers, from public institutions to private businesses - in Denmark as well as abroad.

As a biologist, job opportunities in subjects like environmental consulting, environmental processing, energy guidance or proceedings relating to land contamination are great. You can also become part of the development happening in relation to the environmental considerations which are necessary in order to provide a sustainable development of our future environment. To these development projects, biologists are crucial. Another career path you can choose is to work in administration in environmental-technical departments and consulting companies.

Language entry requirements


A good standard of English is required because teaching at the University involves student participation, class discussion, project work and student presentations.

Entry requirements


Students with bachelor's degrees from countries in the European Union or Switzerland

  • Students with a bachelor's degree in natural sciences or other degree based on at least three years of higher education after the high school level with good grades
  • Qualifications in Biology corresponding to a bachelor's degree in Biology from a well-respected institution

Only students with the prerequisite qualifications can be accepted; it is not possible for students without a command of the Danish language to take supplementary courses to bring them up to the required level for graduate study.


Students with bachelor's degrees from countries outside Switzerland or the European Union

  • Students with a bachelor's degree (or other degree based on at least three years of higher education after the high school level) with good grades
  • Qualifications in Biology corresponding to a bachelor's degree in Biology from a well-respected institution
  • Satisfactory results from the Graduate Record Examination in Biology
