Master of Science in Environmental Sciences

University of Koblenz-Landau

Program Description

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences

University of Koblenz-Landau

Environmental Sciences

Environmental Sciences is an interdisciplinary field covering the many interactions between natural and human systems on multiple scales, from molecules to landscapes. In addition to knowledge in the natural sciences, Master students in the Environmental Sciences program gain an indispensable and solid understanding of the social sciences (e.g. economics, politics, management). With a unique blend of theoretical courses and hands-on practical experiences, students develop abilities to analyze and solve complex environmental problems in an interdisciplinary context.

The Institute for Environmental Sciences offers an excellent program of study by combining expertise from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geoecology and the Social Sciences.

STUDY PROGRAM

All students take the six required modules (Compulsory part). Afterwards, students personalize the program by choosing two of the eight Specialty Areas and completing four modules in each, with an additional module of their choice. An external internship and the Master Thesis with colloquium round out the 4-semester program. The 6-week internship can be performed at an external university or governmental or industrial research institute in Germany or abroad.

Specialty Areas:

  • Environmental Analysis
  • Applied Ecology
  • Socioeconomics & Environmental Management
  • Aquatic Systems
  • Soil Systems
  • Landscapes & Scales
  • Modeling
  • Chemicals in the Environment

REQUIREMENTS

We are looking for highly motivated students interested in working on environmentally relevant problems using an interdisciplinary approach.

Higher Education Entrance Qualification

Anyone wanting to study at a German university needs a higher education entrance qualification ("Hochschulzugangsberechtigung“), respectively a master entrance qualification ("Masterzugangsberechtigung“).

Entrance qualification is not checked by the university, but by Uni-assist (see application process). Uni-assist provides all further information on higher education entrance qualification.

Academic Background

A bachelor degree in Environmental Sciences (or equivalent program with a focus on natural sciences and applied mathematics) with a minimum final grade of “good” (e.g., 2.5 on a 6.0 scale or 3.0 on a 4.0 scale).

Language Proficiency

English

The Program is conducted in English. Therefore good active and passive English language skills are essential.

German

Proficiency of German is not a requirement for application. However, we recommend to learn some basic German for daily life. While in Germany many people speak English, you will generally find life in Germany easier if you speak German.

Application Information

The program starts in the winter semester (October). Enrollment in the summer semester is also possible.

Applicants with a German Bachelor´s Degree

Application via Student Registration Office

Students with a German bachelor degree must apply via the Student Registration Office ("Studierendensekretariat") at the University Koblenz-Landau.

General information on application can be obtained at our university's help site for applicants (in German).

The university opens application for winter term approximately in June.

Students must use the university application portal. You will receive a binding list of required documents after online application. For starters, here is a non-binding preview of required documents. Please address questions regarding your application to the Student Registration Office.

Enrollment

If admitted, you must still enroll at the University of Koblenz-Landau. Enrollment can be done in person or by mail, for the latter you have to send the requested documents. Personal enrollment takes place at the Student Registration Office, Westring 2, Landau.

Application with a non-German Bachelor´s Degree

Deadlines

Due to the long mailing times and visa application process, we strongly advise international applicants in their own interest to apply for the Program as early as possible, at the latest by beginning of June (for winter term) or beginning of December (for the summer term).

However, this is not a formal regulation, but an advice. The Master Program is excepted from the university-wide application deadlines (15th of July / winter term, resp. 15th of January / summer term), thus applications are welcome on an ongoing basis and admittance is possible until available places are filled or the term starts.

Application via Uni-assist

Students with a degree from outside of Germany apply via uni-assist. Uni-assist stands for "University Application Services for International Students". Uni-assist reviews on behalf of University of Koblenz-Landau considering the university standards whether your application meets the formal requirements and informs you and the University about the result. Uni-Assist also converts your grades to the German system.

General information on application via uni-assist can be found at our university's guidelines regarding uni-assist. Uni-assist also provides a detailed description of the process.

Application opens in mid-January (for the next winter term). Depending on application peaks and your background, the review process might take up to 4-6 weeks. If you have any questions during the process, please refer to uni-assist – we do not have insight on your application during this phase.

Uni-assist will keep you informed whether or not your application documents are complete and whether you fulfill the formal requirements for the intended course of studies. After a successful pre-check uni-assist will forward your electronic file to the Institute for Environmental Sciences. We will then check if you fulfil requirements and decide if you will be admitted or not and provide you with our decision and information on further steps.

Enrollment

If admitted, you must enroll at the University of Koblenz-Landau. You can do this after your arrival in Germany, at the beginning of each term. The enrollment takes place at the Student Registration Office ("Studierendensekretariat") at Westring 2, Landau. Further information come with admission letters and can also be found on our homepage: After your Arrival.

Tuition Fee

Students without a master's degree do not have to pay any tuition fees ("Studiengebühren"). Education in Germany is considerably funded by the federal states. As a result, despite the high quality of the German education system, studying in Germany is much cheaper than in countries such as Great Britain or the United States.

Only students who already hold a master's degree from a European university are sometimes required to pay tuition fees (650 € per semester). However, this is decided by our students' office on a case-by-case basis. Students with a master's degree from a German university will have to pay tuition fees.

Semester Contribution

Students enroled at the University of Koblenz-Landau have to pay a recurring semester contribution ("Semesterbeitrag"). It covers part of the administration costs as well as social contributions to the "AStA" (Student Union) and the "Studierendenwerk" (Student Services). Currently, the semester contribution is 104,28€ per semester.

Uni-Assist Fees

Students with a non-German bachelor's degree have to apply for our Program via Uni-assist. Uni-assist raises an application fee of 75€.

Detailed information can be found at Uni-assist's website.

Living Costs

We estimate that you need around 750–900 € monthly for rent, food, books, clothes, phone, health insurance, semester contribution and recreational activities. These costs may vary depending on each student's lifestyle.

For applying to our Program you don't need any proof of financial ability. But you may need it for applying for a visa.

Financing your Studies

Working

The university itself does not have any restrictions on student jobs. But restrictions can be given by visa requirements.

Students from the European Union (EU) usually have free access to the German job market and are practically equivalent to German students. Normally, international student from other countries can work a total of 120 days per year. This does not include work as a research assistant. But please double check at the German embassy or consulate when you apply for your visa.

Scholarships

The University of Koblenz-Landau does not offer any scholarships. For informations about types of funding provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and other institutions, please visit the scholarship database provided by the DAAD.

Please note that the deadlines of the respective institutions are independent of the deadlines of the master program.
