As one of the key technologies of the century, biotechnology utilizes biological systems for the realization of applications in industry, agriculture, environment and medicine. The strongly interdisciplinary oriented study programme focuses on the development of competences for the set-up of bio systems by molecular engineering strategies as well as on a profound education to gain expertise for the development and operation of biotechnological processes and applications. Students benefit from very well-equipped laboratories, high-quality infrastructure and sufficient latoratory places. As a follow on from the master's programme, a scientific doctoral degree can be successfully completed – frequently in the framework of EU programmes, frequently with participation of industrial partners.
Core topics of the Biotechnology Master's Programme are current issues and future oriented subject areas in the fields of
- Molecular Biotechnology and Bioinformatics
- Bioprocess Technology
- Environmental Biotechnology and Food Technologies.
The study programme lasts four semesters and comprises 120 ECTS credits. The master’s degree is based on the bachelor's programme Molekularbiologie or Chemie (with specialization in biosciences) or an equivalent bachelor programme of at least 180 ECTS. Graduates are awarded the degree of „Diplom-Ingenieurin“ (female) or „Diplom-Ingenieur“ (male), which is internationally equivalent to a „Master of Science“ („MSc“).
Admissions: To participate in the selection procedure, you must apply online within the admission period.
Exception: Students who have already completed a relevant bachelor's degree at Graz University of Technology or in the framework of NAWI Graz at the University of Graz. Please note the admission deadlines.
NAWI Graz – Expertise to the Power of Two
Biotechnology is offered as a joint programme shared between Graz University of Technology and Karl-Franzens-University in the framework of NAWI Graz. For students, this means profiting from the top performances and expertise of two universities – an opportunity unique in Austria!
Working as a Biotechnologist
Graduates have job opportunities in the fields of industrial biotechnology, pharmaceutical and chemical production using bio-based processes, pharmaceutical and biomedical research, food technology, environmental biotechnology, agricultural sector, R&D institutions and public authorities. Graduates of the master programme “Biotechnology” possess problem solving skills in R&D, can plan and conduct experiments using state of the art methods and are capable of critically analysing and interpreting experimental data.
