Biochemistry is a scientific discipline studying living systems by chemical and biological methods at the molecular level. It refers to all chemistry branches and especially to organic chemistry. Biochemistry is closely related to physiology and molecular biology and exploits the findings of microbiology. The knowledge obtained in biochemistry is utilized in biotechnology, biomedicine, and agricultural sciences. Master study developes the knowledge obtained in bachelor study and complements it by advanced knowledge from lectures selected by students according to their future specialization in areas of biotechnology, bioanalytical chemistry, clinical biochemistry, applied microbiology, etc. The whole program is concluded by the defense of master thesis.

The study in Biochemistry prepares university-degree experts with an overview of wide array of scientific disciplines: enzymology, microbiology, bioanalytical chemistry, enzyme engineering, plant biochemistry, and molecular biology. Graduates of study in Biochemistry have extended knowledge and skills obtained in lectures and practical work with computer applications, data analysis, informatics, and biomedicine topics of clinical biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, structural biology, proteomics, and bioinformatics.

Graduates work with scientific literature and have the capacity to creatively apply theoretical knowledge and to present results in English, in both written and oral forms. Graduates are able to react flexibly to new practical challenges. They are trained to accomplish research projects within the area of biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, clinical biochemistry, and environmental technologies. They will find employment in laboratories of research institutions and universities, clinical and quality control laboratories in human and veterinary medicine, pharmaceutical companies, and industry branches focused on biochemical technologies.

Admission procedure

Applicants for Ph.D. studies should hold a M.Sc. degree in the relevant field of study and show that they are able to undertake the study successfully. The decision is made by Admission Committee nominated by the Dean of the Faculty based on study record transcripts and personal recommendations. Selected candidates may be invited for an interview.
