Master of Arts in Teacher Preparation

Loyola Marymount University is proud to be a recognized leader in the field of teacher education. Our innovative Teacher Credential Program will prepare you to be a professional, responsible, and caring teacher who will succeed in a variety of culturally and linguistically diverse school settings. Our program provides a firm groundwork in research-based best practices and will prepare you to excel as an effective teacher, as well as to serve as a leader and advocate for equity and excellence in education.

Our Teacher Preparation Program is carefully structured so that over approximately two years, you will complete 33 to 39 units and earn both a California SB2042 Preliminary Teaching Credential and an MA degree.

Based on the grade/level you plan to teach, you will earn either a Multiple Subjects credential (to teach grades K-5 in an Elementary school setting) or a Single Subject credential (to teach grades 6-12 in a Secondary school setting).

Your credential can be combined with either an MA in Education, an MA in Literacy and Language Arts, or an MA in Bilingual Education.

As an LMU Teacher Credential candidate, you will benefit from expert faculty, small class sizes, a strong alumni network, and comprehensive support for completing the academic and administrative requirements needed to obtain a California credential. All of our credential programs are authorized by the state of California and by NCATE.

The School of Education offers a distinct program in Bilingual education with an emphasis on either Spanish or Chinese. Click here for details. Note that language proficiency is a requirement for our bilingual programs.

We also offer an intern track for fulltime public school teachers who wish to earn their SB2042 Preliminary Teaching Credential while they teach fulltime. Those interested in the intern option must first be admitted to the traditional program, secure fulltime employment as a teacher, and fulfill mandatory requirements set by LMU and the CTC. Click here for information on the intern/practitioner option.
