Upon earning the Master’s degree, students will:
• be able to deepen their design knowledge and skills and apply them in multidisciplinary productions in the field of visual communication, for instance in the visualisation of information, in social communication, in concept design and design management;
• be able to manage and execute extensive visual communication design concepts;
• have gained skills in tasks related to visual design and experience in the planning and execution of projects for different publishing platforms, gained an understanding of usability, target group and audience;
• have gained insight into the impact of visual communication on sustainable development and into the possibilities opened by new technologies.
The Master’s Degree Programme in Graphic Design allows students to execute demanding design assignments which develop their conceptual and aesthetic design skills. Students acquire methodological skills in design research and develop a responsible view of the effects of visual communication and deepen and broaden their competencies.
The goal of the studies is the enhancement and application of design skills in multidisciplinary productions. The outcome of the work of a graphic designer or a multidisciplinary design team is usually published in mass media or in more targeted media, but it may also be an immaterial concept, service, corporate image or brand.
The two-year Master's degree programme helps students to create contacts with companies and with the surrounding society through project work. The international dimension of the Master’s degree programme takes the form of international lecturers and students and the possibility of going on an exchange period or work placement abroad.
The timetable of the Master’s degree programme has been planned so as to allow its completion in two years. The personal study plan builds on the students’ interests and special skills, and it supports the Master’s thesis. The degree structure provides students with an opportunity to pursue studies towards a minor in the other schools of Aalto University or at other universities in Finland or abroad.
Applicants for the Master’s Degree Programme inGraphic Design apply in the Master’s level admissions in the field of Art and Design. The key admission criteria for the Master’s programme in Graphic Design are the artistic talent, motivation and potential for development of the applicant. In addition, applicants are required to have methodological abilities for conducting artistic and scientific research.
The admission is based on a two-stage entrance examination, where some students are eliminated after each stage. The admission is based on the application documents, an essay on a given topic, a portfolio and a motivation letter, (where the students must reflect on their areas of interest and make a tentative proposal for the topic of their Master’s theses), a CV and an interview.
