Official Program Description

The II level Master’s degree in Classical and Modern Philology and Literature is a two year program specifically developed to meet the current needs for a high caliber education in all facets of Classical and Modern Philology and Literature.

First year courses address critical subject areas particularly in the fields of Ancient and Modern Languages and Literatures, Linguistics and History.

Second year courses are divided into two modules: LM 14 (Modern Philology and Literature) provides an in-depth study especially within the fields of Italian and Romance Languages, Literatures and Philology, Historical and Musicological Studies. LM 15 (Classics) offers you high-standard, advanced training in Greek and Latin Languages and Literatures, Ancient History, Papyrology, Classical Philology, Archaeology and Sanskrit.

Our Mission

- Knowledge and Understanding: Upon completion of the Master’s degree in Classical and Modern Philology and Literature you will have advanced methodological and philological skills. Our program combines theoretical perspectives with empirical studies and practical applications, and provides the opportunity for practical experience of classroom and individual teaching.

- Applying knowledge and understanding: You will be able to apply your knowledge and comprehension ability autonomously, developing research projects in all key fields of the Humanities.

- Making judgements: Direct and comparative in-depth approaches to literary and critical sources will grant you the tools to interpret and judge complex issues related to specific literary, philological, linguistic and historical phenomena and to submit high level critical proposals.

- Learning skills: You will develop the ability to independently pursue original thinking and to update your knowledge in view of personal research or access to further university education programs (Ph.D. programs, postgraduate schools).

- Communication skills: Thanks to specific core modules developed to meet your needs for high standard communication skills, you will be able to communicate with clarity and authority, in both written and oral form, the results of your studies and researches to specialist and non-specialist audience.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the combined Master’s degree in Classical and Modern Philology and Literature requires the possession of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification with ECTS in Classical and Modern Philology and Literature, History and Archaeology. Upon review of the credentials of an applicant seeking regular admission to the Master’s degree in Classical and Modern Philology and Literature, the Graduate Studies Committee may recommend that the applicant submitting regular application be subjected to specific conditions being satisfied over a specified time period.
