War crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide disrupt societies and pose a threat to international peace and security. Developing theories to understand this human behaviour and designing effective strategies to react to these atrocities is extremely challenging. International Crimes and Criminology is an interdisciplinary Master’s programme in which you will learn how to measure and investigate these crimes. You are challenged to critically reflect on international criminal law and alternative modes of transitional justice, such as truth commissions and amnesties. The Master’s programme is unique: it is not offered by any other university worldwide. Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is close to The Hague, the legal capital of the world.

STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME

The programme in International Crimes and Criminology consists of five required courses, several elective courses and an interdisciplinary Master’s thesis on international crimes. The programme deals extensively with insights from various disciplines such as law, criminology, sociology, psychology and political science. This Master’s aims to define, conceptualize an measure international crimes and to analyse ways to effectively prevent, eradicate and respond to them.

YOUR FUTURE CAREER

The programme leads to the Master of Science degree (MSc.). On completing the programme, you will be able to objectively assess empirical data and critically comment on theoretical notions. On the practical side, you will be able to draft policy documents, develop preventive strategies and carry out fieldwork. Possible careers include working for international criminal courts and tribunals, human rights organizations, refugee organizations, government departments, universities or other research institutes.

SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The International Crimes and Criminology Master’s programme is a selective programme and open to a limited number of students only. An English language proficiency is required. You will also need to have at least a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology, Law, Political Science, Psychology or Social Sciences. In some cases, applicants with other academic backgrounds are selected.
