Global perspectives from the top of Europe

The Master in International Business (IB) is one of the specialisations in the two-year Master of Science (MSc) programme at NHH.

The world is getting smaller. The forces of globalisation and internationalisation have led to people, businesses and markets across the globe being brought closer together than ever before. The modern firm is required to master both international and local dimensions if it aims to succeed in an increasingly competitive setting. Today’s global business environment therefore offers excellent opportunities for qualified professionals seeking international careers. The IB specialisation at NHH is a specialised two-year course of study specifically aimed to equip students with the right mix of analytical and practical skills for a career within multinational companies, international organisations or smaller firms whose activities involve a substantial degree of international business. The objectives of the MSc programme is to educate students in the field of international business and to prepare them for international careers in managment. The programme is designed to provide the students with a strong theoretical base through practical case studies and interactions with the business community.

By focusing on numerous topical clusters and independent projects, the IB curriculum caters for a wide variety of intellectual interests. Students have the possibility to extend and deepen their understanding of different aspects of modern business practices.

The programme broadly focuses on three main subject areas:

  • International Economics (including globalisation, integration, and trade)
  • International Business Strategy and Management
  • International Finance

Flexible Programme Structure

The IB programme has the following general structure; it consists of twelve courses and a thesis, adding up to a total of 120 ECTS credits. Students select six courses within the IB specialication as their major. By selecting three of the remaining six courses from one of the other specialisations offered by NHH, students will build a minor concentration. This gives the students an in-depth understanding of a second field in addition to their major. The combination of a major and a minor provides the students with a broader perspective and an expertise that will give them an advantage in the job market. Normally one would follow courses in three semesters and dedicate the final semester to the thesis. The programme is fully taught in English.

International Opportunities

There are several international opportunities offered to students at NHH.

The school is the Norwegian member of the prestigious CEMS network (The Global Alliance in Management Education). CEMS is a global cooperation platform between top business schools, corporations and non-profit organisations aiming to educate future international business leaders. CEMS offers the CEMS Master's in International Management (MIM), the most international and culturally diverse MSc in the market and ranked as one of the best in the world by Financial Times since the ranking began in 2005. Students in the MSc programme at NHH can seek to combine their degree with the CEMS MIM, enabling them to graduate with two internationally recognised qualifications. The combination of these two prestigious programmes provides a solid foundation for students seeking an international business career.

The Double Degree programme is a cooperation between NHH and other highly renowned institutions, like HEC Paris in France and Richard Ivey School of Business in Canada. After completion of the programme you will be awarded a master degree from both NHH and the partner institution.

Furthermore, NHH participates in exchange programs with more than 130 institutions in over 40 countries.

Career Opportunities

NHH graduates are highly sought after in the job market. In addition to their own efforts, students are supported by the Student Welfare Organisation in Bergen (SiB), the Student Union (NHHS) and the school when preparing and searching for career opportunities.

The most recent survey shows that more than 70 percent of NHH students find employment before graduation, and the majority of all 2014 graduates have a salary from 50-60.000 EURO.

“The International Business portfolio is unique because it has acquainted me with students from a myriad of cultures and different working styles through engaging projects and group work. The broad scope of the curriculum allows specialisation in one discipline, but also gives flexibility to experiment with other courses.”
