About the programme

The Professional Master’s study programme “Information technology” aim is to educate high qualification specialists for professional activity in the field of Technologies and Telecommunication with specialization in Software Engineering or Management of Information Technology projects.

Admission requirements:

Duration of studies is 2,5 years –Bachelor degree in Computer Sciences or Information Technologies; Duration of studies 3 years – Bachelor degree in Mathematics or in Physics. A thesis (5 to 10 pages) about a free chosen and topical research problem in the field of Computer Sciences or Information Technologies;

Career opportunities

After obtaining Professional Master’s degree graduates can work in organizations that carry out software development, deployment, maintenance, providing information technology consulting and information systems audit. Graduates can continue their education in Liepaja University doctoral "E-learning technology and management" study programme or in other Latvian universities or abroad.

Assessment

Assessment of students’ knowledge is a continuous process, which lasts during the whole semester and it is done on the basis of independent assignments and tests, as well as passing credit tests and examinations twice a year. During the semester each course envisages several independent assignments – practical and laboratory works, tests and reports. At the end of each course students pass a written or oral examination or a credit test. In some courses, during which both lectures and laboratory works are planned, students take both a credit test and an examination. Assessment is made by a ten-point scale or with the help of a credit test.

Programme structure

The student receives professional qualification of the professional Master degree, when he has fully acquired the study programme, has obtained practical skills during implementation of qualification and Master practices, has elaborated and successfully defended the diploma project and the master paper.

During the studies software engineer obtains knowledge and skills, which are necessary for elaboration of software, its introduction and maintenance according to the functionality, quality and resource conditions, organisation and management of programmer workgroups, as well as systematic improvement of knowledge and skills.

In its turn, information technology project manager acquires knowledge and skills, which are necessary for elaboration and introduction of the necessary software, planning, organizing and monitoring of maintenance projects, as well as for implementation of information technology consultations or system audit projects, and management according to the branch standards and quality requirements.

The size of the Professional Master’s study programme is 150 ECTS (100 CP) for 2,5 years, and 180 ECTS (120 CP) for 3 years.

The study programme A part is formed by General education courses in the volume of 30 ECTS (20 CP) and branch theoretic courses in the volume of 33 ECTS (22 CP). The students, who have to study for the period of 3 years, also acquire Computer Science courses in the volume of 30 ECTS (20 CP).

General education courses (30 ECTS / 20 CP): Economics and Entrepreneurship, Professional communication, Philosophy, General Quality Management, Project Management and Modelling of Business Processes.

Branch theoretic courses (33 ECTS / 22 CP): System analysis, Information system security, Software testing, Business process re-engineering, High performance computing, Mathematical models and tools, Natural language computer-based processing, System design and tools, Methodology of researches, E-Learning didactics and technologies, Study paper (multimedia system elaboration project)

Computer Science courses (30 ECTS / 20 CP): Algorithms and data structures, Database technologies, Computer architecture, Operating systems, Programming languages, Software Engineering

The study program B part is created by branch professional specialization courses in the volume of 9 ECTS (6 CP) depending on the chosen qualification:

Software engineering : Computer graphics, Multimedia system elaboration, Study paper (programming project)

IT project management :Personnel management, Office and Management information systems, Study paper (information system project)

Practice (39 ECTS / 26 CP):Qualification practice (30 ECTS / 20 CP), Research practice (9 ECTS / 6 CP)

Annual/state testing (39 ECTS / 26 CP): Diploma project (9 ECTS / 6 CP), Master paper (30 ECTS / 20 CP)

During the studies students have 3 practical works, where they strengthen the obtained knowledge and skills defined by the profession standards.

In the 1st study year for 2.5 year - qualification practice I (8 CP)

In the 2nd study year for 2.5 year - qualification practice II (12 CP) and research practice (6 CP)

In the 2nd study year for 3 year - qualification practice I (8 CP)

In the 3rd study year for 3 year - qualification practice II (12 CP)

Methods of teaching and learning

Acquisition of the study programme is organized in the form of lectures, seminars, practical classes and laboratory works, students’ independent assignment (individually, literary studies, development of a project in small groups). Implementation of each course envisages integration of knowledge, skills and abilities, succession of the courses in their relation to writing the students’ research project.

Individual planning

During the course students fulfill tasks of the practice, set up and present a term paper and the Diploma project, the Master paper (third academic year). During the studies students have 3 practical works, where they strengthen the obtained knowledge and skills defined by the profession standards.
