Most of the mineral and energy resources are buried into the ground. Therefore, the Master of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering is a major actor in prospection and evaluation of deposits, extraction of ores and hydrocarbons, and in the processing of ores and minerals. In addition, these processes will be dealt by the Master of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering with the most adequate technical and economic means together with the lowest environmental impact.
Human infrastructures, set up at the surface and into the subsurface of the earth, strongly rely on the characteristics of the soils and rocks. The expertise of the Master of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering is therefore of prime importance to the design and the achievement of civil engineering projects such as tunnels, dams, bridges, buildings, underground storage, etc.
Masters of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering prevent effects on human infrastructures of natural events such as earthquakes, landslides, etc. He or she will also prevent the impacts of human activities on the environment and on natural resources. In other words, the engineer is involved in problems such as groundwater protection area, rehabilitation of polluted sites, geological storage of CO2 and radioactive waste.
Profile of the programme
During the course of their studies, students in geology and mining engineering acquire a good knowledge both in Earth sciences and in engineering sciences. A basic training in Earth sciences - geology, mineralogy, petrography, stratigraphy, palaeontology and tectonics - is completed by training in hydrogeology, in applied geophysics, in geostatistics and modelling in geology.
The training in mining engineering concerns rock mechanics, modelling in rock mechanics, extraction of mineral resources, mineral and waste processing, drilling technologies and reservoir engineering.
The training in mining and geology offers two options:
- Resources and Infrastructures focused on ore-forming processes, design and construction of mining-like structures and, planning and optimisation of mining operations (Project)
- Environment and Natural Risks focused on management of geological risks, characterisation of brownfields subsurface and remediation of polluted soils. It also contains a specific project.
Practice both in laboratory and on the field is specific to geology and mining engineering studies. Corporate visits, field excursions, field camps and a study tour are organised during the course of the studies. Learning is strongly connected with research (The Mining and Geology Division participates to 3 of the 5 research clusters of the Faculty of Engineering – Materials, Energy and Risks). Erasmus conventions were signed with several Institutions, especially in Spain.

By the end of this specific course programme, the students will be able to:
- Solve problems in applied geology: identifying and understanding geological and underground structures, characterisation and evaluation of mineral and energy resources deposits, production of water.
- Solve problems in mining engineering: planning and optimisation of extraction of mineral and energy resources, design and construction of mining-like structures (tunnels, dams), deep drilling and mineral processing.
- Manage problems of environment and sustainable development in connection with mineral and energy resources, water resources, waste, polluted sites, geological hazards.
- Apply adequate methodologies, techniques and tools to efficiently solve technical, economic and environmental issues as mentioned above.
- Show initiative, autonomy and ability of observation and analysis.
Graduating in geology and mining engineering offers a wide range of job opportunities worldwide as well as in Belgium.
Extractive industries and, more generally speaking, heavy industries are the traditional sectors of employment. Masters of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering find jobs in mines and quarries, oil and gas production companies, groundwater production companies, cement works, mineral processing plants, steelmaking plants, etc. They occupy positions both in production departments as well as in R&D departments.
There are also job opportunities in fields such as engineering geology and geotechnics for activities like: designing and construction of tunnels, dams and bridges or the management of geological risks (earthquakes, landslides, etc.), both in construction companies and in consultancies.
Their training, both in Earth sciences and in engineering sciences, gives Masters of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering opportunities of employment in the field of the environmental engineering, with activities as diverse as the rehabilitation of mine and quarry sites, the management of waste, the study and prevention of environmental impact of industrial activities, the remediation of polluted sites.

Access to further studies
The Master of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering can lead to postgraduate studies in order to specialize, do further training or research:
- either by completing another Engineering Master’s degree, at the University of Mons or any other European university, e.g. in Quality Control and Management, Industrial Risks and Operational Safety, Transportation Management, Master in Business Administration, etc.
- or by conducting a PhD thesis in engineering sciences possibly with the support of research clusters of the Faculty and the University of Mons.
