Master in English Philology

The following professional standards define the competencies and skills of the Master's degree graduates in English Philology/Translation and Modern English Literature.

On the basis of the competencies and skills the students have already acquired in their Bachelor's degree program in English Philology, they expand, enlarge and build up their professional competencies in the sphere of both theory and practice of English Philology. The main focus is laid on:

  • English and world literature and Literary Theory;
  • British and American Studies;
  • Theory and practice of the different types of translation as well as on the sociocultural aspects of translation;

Special emphasis is laid on the improvement of the translation skills of the students regarding both English-Bulgarian and Bulgarian -English translation as well as on the essential features of Modern
English Literature.

The primary objective of the MA programme is to combine theory and practice in the most optimal way.

With respect to their future professional realization as translators, editors and publishers, students are also given basic knowledge in technology of publication and text editing.

The Master's degree in English Philology /Translation and Modern English Literature qualifies the graduates for a PhD degree.
Adiitionally the studensts are provided with training in the fundamental branches of the Theory of Literature and the Theory and Practice of Translation aiming at improving their skills in both oral and written communication in English..

The students who should obtain a Master's degree in English Philology /Translation and Modern English Literature are expected to:

  • have a Bachelor's degree in English Philology or Applied Linguistics;
  • have profound theoretical and empirical knowledge of the material presented in the courses of the Master's degree program;
  • be able to use the appropriate specific scientific terminology in the field;
  • be able to analyze literary and linguistic data using modern interdisciplinary approaches;
  • be able to analyze literary and linguistic data using modern interdisciplinary approaches;
  • be able to manage various scientific tasks by themselves, including selection, research and analysis of language data;
  • acquire skills for critical analysis and be able to interpet and validate variuos cultural phenomena;
  • be able to further improve their professional careers.
