For an educator wanting to teach AP or Dual-Credit in the high school, there is a non-degree, certification program in Curriculum and Instruction.

The Master of Education-Sports Science degree has available three options: Applied Exercise Science; Sport Education; and Sport and Facility Management.

The Master of Science degrees are offered face-to-face on the Oakland City main campus in Oakland City, Indiana and at the Plainfield Center, in Plainfield, Indiana. Individual courses may be offered at the Evansville and Bedford Centers on demand.

Program Overview

Based on the IDOE Division of Professional Standards Board’s adoption of the INTASC principles, NBPTS propositions, and ELCC standards, and the redesign of Indiana’s licensure patterns based on developmental and content areas using performance-based assessment, the School of Education graduate programs in Building Level Administration and Curriculum and Instruction are designed and delivered in a face-to-face format consistent with the meeting of these standards.

The M.S.Ed. in Sport Science Education is a collaborative learning community dedicated to the preparation of liberally educated students to assume professional positions in the education areas of athletic training, athletic director, commercial and therapeutic recreation, exercise science, physical education, sport management, wellness, coaching, and sport education by developing physical, social, and spiritual dispositions and skills that are requisite for professional success. Through meaningful instruction, scholarship, and professional service, we challenge and support our students in serving the local, regional and global communities.

The master’s degrees were designed to accomplish the following: (1) provide a catalyst for current educators, a forum for continued professional development with the goal of developing a continuing professional development plan. (2) Provide experienced educators with an opportunity to grow within their professional careers by providing educational opportunities that allow them to demonstrate competencies at the chosen Master’s level. (3) Provide an opportunity for already licensed educators to develop additional skills.

The thrust of this program is performance based. It provides an intensive, integrated curriculum that requires all graduate students to complete self-assessment, to design and evaluate curriculum from a field research base, and to report their findings for publication. OCU’s research has determined that this approach meets the needs of its constituents as it provides professional growth in (a) communicating with others, (b) assisting restructuring and reforming current instructional practices in the schools, (c) developing leadership skills necessary in working with students, parents/caregivers, and community leaders, and (d) providing hands-on and Internship opportunities for educators to conduct research and to assess the value of identified pedagogical strategies – multiple intelligences, learning styles, integrated instruction, peer mentoring, etc.
