Digital fabrication opens up the gates towards the world of production so that almost anyone can design and build spaces, objects and devices. Designers and professionals whose work defines the objects that surround us can harness the advantages of digital fabrication in order to create new business opportunities and apply the benefits of new technologies to develop new solutions.

The Master's Course in Design for Digital Fabrication provides the necessary perspective and tools to implement new production possibilities in different professional fields. It is a test-bed that provides students with certain abilities and competences that build on their professional background, giving them the skills to design, develop and implement creative projects by using techniques such as 3D-printing and numerical control cutters.

Objective

To equip students with digital fabrication methodologies and tools in order to become key players in implementing this knowledge in different design areas, adding value to the corporate environment and to their careers.

Students are also encouraged to develop critical judgement in order to decide how and when to implement different tools in an innovative way, and to understand the possibilities of applying digital fabrication in product design, interior decoration, fashion and visual communication, by identifying the best way to bring their ideas to fruition and by appraising their impact on business benefits.

They will also learn how to use digital fabrication tools by combining creativity, management and entrepreneurial spirit within actual businesses, where the aim is for them to become key figures in creating sustainable value with their proposals.

Methodology

IED Barcelona proposes an innovative methodology in its intensive courses, where both face-to-face and distance learning are put together. This allows students to spend a 3-month period in Barcelona and take the rest of the course from home.

Lectures are held in two environments and teachers coordinate these two spaces so as to offer students the best workspace in which to develop their knowledge in design towards digital fabrication.

  • IED Barcelona: Theory and project lectures are held on the premises of IED. The multicultural and interdisciplinary environment of IED Barcelona is the perfect place for designing projects and developing innovation.

  • Ateneu de Fabricació de Ciutat Meridiana: Technical lectures, where students learn and implement digital fabrication techniques, are held on the premises of the Ateneu de Fabricació de Ciutat Meridiana. This digital fabrication lab belongs to the Red de Ateneos de Fabricación (cultural centre network) driven by Barcelona City Council, within the strategic framework of SmartCities. These cultural centres are spaces for creation and learning and are linked to social innovation, new technologies and, particularly, to digital fabrication.

Students are provided with all the necessary technologies in order to learn and implement the different processes and techniques of digital fabrication, with a view to transforming their ideas and concepts into actual products that are useful for society.

Student profile

The programme is geared towards graduates in product design, interior decoration, graphic design and visual communication, architects, fashion designers, engineers, artists and professionals who design, develop and bring to fruition all sorts of goods and products. Professionals interested in fostering and driving the success of digital fabrication are also welcome.

Career options

Students can add value to their professional background by including digital fabrication on their list of skills. They will become digital fabrication strategists, who are able to work in businesses, innovation consultancies and design studios, and join multidisciplinary teams or develop their own projects as businesspeople. The course also helps students to build a career in design innovation, strategy, product and brand design and social enterprise.

Coordinator

BERNAT CUNÍ

Bernat is an expert designer, researcher and manager in several fields of industrial, ecological and entrepreneurial design. He is currently involved in generative design, creative encoding and fast fabrication experiments. He is particularly interested in the future of design and popularising the design process and tools.

  • Undertake new ventures based on innovation as a distinguishing feature.
  • Conceptualization of new products.
  • Creative development and business management.

They will acquire the necessary skills to work in multidisciplinary teams, take leadership positions and investigate in the field.

Duration and frequency:

Frequency: 7 months - 3 onsite - 4 online

Timetable: Monday to Friday from 9.40 a.m. to 14.30 p.m. and from 3.00 p.m. to 6.10 p.m.

  • The educational planning for all IED Master courses is aligned with the criteria established by the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The IED Master program has adopted a credit structure that follows the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The IED Master issues private degrees.
