Program Description

Master in Computer Science

University of Helsinki

Computer ScienceAll programmes within the Computer Science are strongly research-based and especially suitable for research-oriented MSc students. Graduates of these programmes are employed as technical specialists or scientists and they often continue their studies towards a PhD degree.

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki is a world leader in algorithm and machine learning research. It also has long traditions in world-class bioinformatics research. The department is renowned for the research and development on Linux, mobile Linux, and wireless communications and systems. It is highly visible on international standardization forums and organizations and has many globally renowned research partners. The Department of Computer Science has excellent collaboration networks involving universities, research institutes, and industry, in Finland and abroad. It is a key academic contributor to the success of Finnish industry in the telecommunication field.

The academic expertise accentuated by these programmes guarantees you a great opportunity to become a real IT professional.

The programme educates experts who can turn biological questions into appropriate computational data analysis challenges. As a student of this programme, you get a view of current hot-topics in molecular biology and learn general principles and methods for formulating and solving computational problems. In addition to the core methodological studies in algorithms and machine learning, particularly for biological data, you are encouraged to get experience and take courses in molecular biology and related areas.

As a student of this programme, you have a chance of getting a comprehensive view of computationally efficient algorithmic techniques needed in processing large volumes of data and learning from the data. The topics include machine learning, data mining, probabilistic models, information-theoretic modelling, string algorithms, and approximation algorithms. The successful completion of the programme requires solid skills in mathematics and statistics.

The programme educates experts on software architectures and systems for the Internet, mobile services and applications, interactive systems, mobile security and privacy, and on global service ecosystems. As a student of this programme, you learn to design, assess and develop complex systems. The topics of study include algorithms and protocols; communication, service and information networking architectures; trust, security and privacy; mobile networking; as well as collaborative and interoperable computing.

The application period for International Master´s Programmes beginning the autumn of 2016 (2016 admissions) opens in early December 2015 and closes on January 27, 2016 at 3:00 pm (GMT +2). For more information on the International Master´s Programmes (IMP), see Studying/How to apply/Master's studies.
