Welcome to the Master in International Communication
This double degree programme is offered in association with the Geert Hofstede Consortium.
Four universities, all specialising in corporate communication and public relations in an international, professional context, have joined forces to form the Geert Hofstede Consortium. The consortium offers a unique joint master's programme in International Communication (MIC). The programme is a full-time study over three semesters (90 EC). You will study at two universities, with the possibility to study in the Netherlands, Italy, the United Kingdom and Lithuania. Graduates receive two degrees and a certificate from the Geert Hofstede Consortium. The Master International Communication (MIC) is an ambitious programme for those who aspire to an international career in communication. Whether you have recently graduated or are currently working, the MIC prepares you for a career as a communication practitioner in senior managerial or consultancy positions, responsible for the external and internal communication of an organisation.
The programme has a competency based, hands-on approach. As part of a team, you will design communication strategies for clients needing results. Academic achievement is not enough to be successful in this programme. You will have to prove yourself as a creative problem solver, able to measure up to professional standards as well as academic excellence.
The first semester introduces you to the full breadth of the profession. What are the roles and responsibilities of the communication professional in an organisation from a strategic perspective? Which main functional areas are there? How does culture influence communication? What is the relationship between the organisation and its international and intercultural environment? All assignments and projects focus on sustainability.
During the second semester you will complete a number of specialisations from one of the consortium universities of your choice. The specialisations change according to what is happening in the professional field. Hanze UAS, Groningen offers the specialisations the Issues Manager, Media Analytics & Global Societal Challenges and Big Date & Visualization, Intercultural Training & Project Management.
You must demonstrate mastery of those competences required to obtain the title Master in International Communication. You will choose a professional role and analytically solve a problem for an outside client (working in-house or as a consultant). The result of this project will be based on applied research and the use of an appropriate methodology. Every problem requires a solution from an international or intercultural perspective.
One programme, two degrees
The 90 ECTS study programme allows you to study at two consortium partner universities. Each of these will award you a master's degree. You will also receive a consortium certificate stating that you succesfully completed an international joint master's programme, developed with the support of the European Union. All degrees are fully accredited.
As a graduate of the Master in International Communication you will be an interculturally competent communication professional able to work in a global context. You will be able to anticipate changes and develop, implement and manage sustainable and innovative solutions to communication issues. As a graduate, you will have the skills and knowledge needed to work at managerial or consultancy level.
Nearly all MIC graduates have found a job either during or shortly after their graduation project. Graduates have found jobs as public relations managers, corporate communications consultants, marketing & communications heads and brand directors. Companies where our graduates have found positions include Google, Edelman PR, Ogilvy Group, Walt Disney, Hewlett Packard, IBM and ABN Amro bank.
Bachelor’s degree in related fields: communication, humanities, social sciences, business, management, linguistics; Extensive work experience in related fields may also be considered.
A certificate of proof of a sufficient proficiency in the English language: either IELTS with an overall result of 6.5 and no subscores below 5.5 or TOEFL ibt total of 90 with minimum 18 in Reading, 17 in Listening, 20 in Speaking and 17 in Writing. Your IELTS or TOEFL must not be older than two years.
