Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest

Program Description

Master Ingénierie des structures - génie civil

Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest

This program is fully taught in French!

Accredited by the Romanian Ministry of Education in 2013, the master “Ingénierie des structures” is a 2 years post graduate program, with teaching and examinations entirely in French language.

Organised within the Faculty of Engineering in Foreign Languages (FILS) of the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest (UTCB), the master contains 3 semesters with lectures and exams and 1 semester entirely devoted to the master thesis. The master program has a total of 240 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System).

The master is opened to Romanian and foreign bachelor graduates. It also accommodates Erasmus+ exchange students. UTCB has 67 Erasmus+ agreements with universities from 17 countries.

In the academic year 2015-2016 a total of 8 Erasmus+ exchange students already registered for joining our master: 1 from INSA Toulouse, 2 from Université Bretagne-Sud, 1 from Université de Nantes, 1 from Universitad Politecnica de Madrid, 2 from University of Minho, 1 from University of Porto. The master provides a supplement of theoretical and modelling knowledge together with advanced courses in structural engineering. A core topic of the master is the earthquake resistant design with a significant amount of dedicated hours (structural dynamics, engineering seismology, earthquake engineering, seismic fragility, nonlinear analysis). Earthquake resistant design concepts and applications are also included in almost all lectures and projects, Romania being an earthquake prone country with a long tradition and experience in earthquake engineering.

The master benefits of the activities within UTCB’s Seismic Risk Assessment Research Center (CERS), an important number of the teaching staff being CERS members.

With small groups of students and a close contact with the teaching staff, with a remarkable international environment (within FILS there are enrolled students from 21 countries, plus Erasmus students), the master of Structural Engineering at FILS-UTCB is an excellent choice of post graduate studies for civil engineers interested in structural analysis, civil and hydrotechnical constructions design, earthquake engineering design and research. Francophonie is a strong asset of UTCB. Member of Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) from 1995, UTCB accommodates a french lecturer (within a convention with AUF and French Embassy), a french library, a Centre de reussite universitaire (CRU) and organizes and participates to a lot of francophone activities.

The francophone master was granted with a support project of AUF (2013-2015) that allowed the purchase of reference books and lecture notes and the exchange of professors with French partner universities. Professors from Université de Nantes, Ecole Centrale de Paris and Université de Grenoble taught within the master. The master also accommodates incoming professors within Erasmus+. Studying at FILS-UTCB will also allow you to discover the dynamic student’s life in Bucharest and to enjoy the beauty of Romania.

Admission and study fee:

Admission is based on the bachelor studies results.

  • EU graduates can study for free in the limit of the available places for Romanian and EU citizens (30 places in the academic year 2015-2016), or with an annual study fee of 4500 lei (~1000 Euro)
  • Non-EU graduates can study with a study fee of 270 Euro/month (the academic year has 9 months)

For the academic year 2015-2016 students from Central and Oriental Europe can apply for AUF scholarships for master studies.

Language proficiency:

Graduates with bachelor studies entirely in French or holders of a language proficiency certificate can directly join the master. The other candidates must pass a language proficiency test during the admission (EU candidates) or after their arrival (non-EU candidates). The same master program is also provided at FILS with teaching and examinations in English language. Exchange students can benefit of this, being allowed to select lectures in both languages and consequently they can develop their foreign languages skills.

Admission calendar:

  • For Romanian and EU candidates - 22 - 24 September 2015
  • For non-EU candidates – continuous until 20th of September 2015.

Non-EU candidates must obtain the acceptance for studies in Romania from the Romanian Ministry of Education. This can be obtained through UTCB services (and it includes the files checking, evaluation and UTCB’s acceptance) or directly at the Ministry. Detailed information about the procedure for obtaining the acceptance is available on the website and /or by email: secretariat@ General contact: EU candidates contact: Non-EU candidates contact:

Upon request master students have ensured places in student’s dormitory:

  • Romanian and EU students must make a request during the registration for admission
  • Non-EU students must send their request after receiving the acceptance for studying in Romania, through email (

Romanian and EU students accepted on state budget funding (i.e. without study fee) can obtain scholarships as function of their academic results and their personal financial situation, according to the rules established by UTCB’s Senate and depending on the scholarship funding at UTCB from the Ministry of Education.

Non-EU students can obtain scholarships for studying in Romania from their governments, from the Romanian Government or from other international organizations.
