MSc in Sustainable Energy Technology
Social demand for sustainable energy supplies is growing. The generation and use of energy are becoming more efficient and clean all the time. One factor of change is the increasing use of renewable energy sources such as biomass. The energy market is also changing as a result of internationalization and liberalization.
The multidisciplinary Master’s program Sustainable Energy Technology trains engineers who are able to anticipate these change processes. The departments Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, Applied Physics, Architecture, Building and Planning and Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences cooperate in this Master’s program. Engineers from this Master’s program therefore will be highly familiar with the latest developments in sustainable energy technology, and will have a good understanding of the opportunities and limitations involved in its application.
The program trains engineers with broadly based knowledge of energy technology. To provide a good technical base, the program starts with a number of basic courses such as physical transport phenomena. This knowledge is applied in the specialized courses in the field of energy from biomass, solar and wind energy, hydrogen as a sustainable energy carrier and intelligent electrical networks and the application of sustainable energy technology in the built environment. This fundamental knowledge is a primary requirement for evaluation of the different technologies and assessment of their feasibility.
Also required is an understanding of the energy infrastructure and the community in which the technology is to be applied. You will therefore take courses in which the introduction of technical innovations in the community is a central element, together with attention for economics and consumer behavior. You will learn how to apply the knowledge that you have gained in projects involving both the system-based and interdisciplinary approaches. Elective courses which you choose together with your supervisor allow you to gain more specialized knowledge, which you will need for your final project and your internal research traineeship.
The discipline of Sustainable Energy Technology combines a number of specializations. The program is based on research carried out by the six participating departments. Research groups from these departments combine sustainability with research in the field of energy technology. A part of this research is carried out in partnership with different departments, which results in a good balance between broadly based and in-depth research. The multidisciplinary research in the field of sustainable energy technology is organized into the next themes, which are also the focal areas of research:
- Energy from Biomass
- Solar Energy
- Energy and Society
- Electrical Power Engineering
- Wind Energy
- Sustainable Energy in the Built Environment
You can specialize in either one of these areas and graduate. This at the TU/e or at one of the partners: Delft University of Technology, University of Twente or the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN).
There is a strong demand for graduate engineers from the Master’s program in Sustainable Energy Technology. The liberalization of the energy markets in Europe, globalization and the increasing shift towards sustainability in the energy industry imply that energy specialists need more than engineering knowledge alone. They also need to have an understanding of economics, policy and innovation processes. These industry changes ensure that demand for Sustainable Energy Technology engineers is strong, in the energy industry, in related fields such as the supply industry, consultancies and in other parties involved in energy policy, such as local, national and international government, at research institutes or engineering firms.
On completion of the program, you will have mastered and will be able to apply the fundamentals of Sustainable Energy Technology. As an engineer you will be able to provide technical solutions for problems and questions related to process and product engineering. In professional activities the Eindhoven Sustainable Energy Engineers always bear in mind the economic, social, environmental and ethical aspects.
Because of the multidisciplinary character of the program several bachelor degrees provide admission to Sustainable Energy Technology. You should have at least a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields of expertise:
- Applied Physics
- Chemical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Innovation Sciences
- Mechanical Engineering
- or an equivalent study
There are a number of general requirements for admission to this Master’s degree program:
-- A relevant Bachelor's degree (or equivalent), based on a program of sufficient academic level and quality to be able to complete this Master's program.
-- A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 75% of the scale maximum. Students hoping to participate in selection for the TSP scholarship require a CGPA of 80% minimum.
-- You must be able to demonstrate sufficient command of the English language in which the program is taught.
-- To prove sufficient command of the English language you should submit an Academic IELTS or TOEFL test.
