MSc in Renewable Energy
This programme responds to current global imperatives with respect to the rising price of fossil fuels and the cost to the environment of their use. Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of climate change and must adapt or perish. The emphasis in this master’s programme is on providing new graduates and persons already working in various sectors of the economy, with professional education in renewable and sustainable energy related disciplines. The programme will provide basic expertise in these areas, furnishing graduates with the ability to begin/continue a career in the field of energy sustainability.
The energy sector is the most critical sector for all the islands of the Caribbean region and in most cases represents a major source of economic vulnerability. All other forms of economic activity hinge upon having a reliable and cost effective energy supply.
Improvements are required in the capacity of the human resource to properly manage the more efficient use of energy, and facilitate the uptake rate of renewable energy technologies. The technical expertise in the implementation of renewable energy technologies and networking into the existing energy framework is required in order to make the essential transition to utilizing a more distributed indigenous renewable energy resource.
This Programme is intended to meet the needs of a broad range of professionals whose activities are related to energy affairs and sustainable development. Included will be natural scientists, engineers and technical-related professionals, as well as those from the social sciences such as administrators or lawyers. This programme is an entirely new programme, consisting of new and existing courses.
COURSE OF STUDY
This is a 15-month full time course (27 months part-time) leading to an MSc degree in Renewable Energy Management and is delivered face-to-face. This includes a 3-month Research Project/Research Internship, based on campus or with a host organisation. The Programme is highly interdisciplinary and requires basic knowledge of mathematics, physics, and management, as well as awareness of environmental and socio- economic policy issues.
- First degree in economics, engineering, management or natural sciences; or
- First degree in any discipline plus relevant working experience in a related field;or
- Significant work experience in a management environment (Degrees must be from a recognised University).
It is expected that the majority of entrants to the course will be from the following
- Recent graduates seeking to upgrade their qualifications for work in an energy-related field.
- Workers in any field seeking to retool or upgrade their skills and qualifications.
- Managers in any field seeking to implement aspects of renewable energy in their environment.
