The master’s programme Organic Synthesis/Medicinal Chemistry aims to provide students with knowledge on the design, synthesis and evaluation of low molecular weight biologically active organic substances. The programme offers advanced knowledge in organic synthesis and pharmaceutically active compounds, and knowledge of medicinal chemistry.

Biologically active substances with low molecular weight represent the core of life‑science research. Knowledge of molecular structures and their properties is crucial to our understanding of a vast scientific area, from pharmaceutically active compounds to organic electronics and their incorporation into diagnostic tools such as biosensors.

Programme description

The master’s programme Organic Synthesis/Medicinal Chemistry aims to provide students with knowledge on the design, synthesis and evaluation of low molecular weight biologically active organic substances. The programme offers advanced knowledge in organic synthesis and pharmaceutically active compounds, and knowledge of medicinal chemistry.

Biologically active substances with low molecular weight represent the core of life‑science research. Knowledge of molecular structures and their properties is crucial to our understanding of a vast scientific area, from pharmaceutically active compounds to organic electronics and their incorporation into diagnostic tools such as biosensors.

The main focus of the programme is the comprehension of organic synthesis pertaining to biologically active compounds. The programme begins with courses in organic chemistry and organic synthesis, building from the basic concepts to the advanced level, followed by an introduction in medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical technology. It also covers protein chemistry and biomolecular design, which broadens the students’ knowledge in the field of bio-organic chemistry.

The programme concludes with a thesis project, either in a research group or in industry. Our research facilities are well equipped with all the necessary analytical/diagnostic tools found in industrial research facilities.

Career opportunities

Following the final examination, students will have gained the theoretical knowledge and the practical experience needed to work with organic synthesis in the pharmaceutical industry. Possible employers cover companies ranging from research intensive start-ups to major pharmaceutical producers with large research and development (R&D) departments.

Alternatively, students may continue conducting research leading to a doctoral degree. Research positions include a broad span of work, from disease diagnosis to detecting chemical compounds. Examples of the latter include biosensors for early stage detection of Alzheimer’s disease.
