MSc in Economics and Business Administration – Management Accounting and Control
A FUNDAMENTAL ASPECT OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
Management accounting is one of the most fundamental aspects of business administration. This programme covers both management accounting techniques and their application in production companies, service industries, and the public sector. The programme emphasises the role of the management accountant in both a local setting and an international context. The programme objective is to provide students with solid skills that will guide them in their future career as key decision-makers in different types of organisations. We stretch the concept of accounting beyond methods of combining numbers. For us, it is about constructing accounts, being accountable, and holding accountable. Our goal is to enable our students to do accounting for human action.
The first semester features the following courses: Foundations of Management Accounting Research; Cost Management – Theories, Models and Technologies; Production Planning and Control; Strategic and Organisational Concepts for Management Control; and Accounting Information Systems.
The second semester comprises five specialising courses: Planning and Budgeting; Performance Management; International Financial Accounting I; International Financial Accounting II; and Practice Project in Management Accounting.
In the third semester, students can choose courses in their areas of interest. These can be taken at Aarhus University, at a partner university outside Denmark, or at the AU Summer University. Students can also participate in internship programmes in Denmark or abroad.
The fourth semester is devoted to the final thesis, where students have the opportunity to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest.
Most of our graduates begin their career as controllers. Graduates can be found in all types of organisations, but common to all is that their skills and professional attitude are highly recognised and respected. For this reason most of our graduates climb the career ladder quickly, and rapidly find themselves in key positions in the organisation they work for.
“I work as a management consultant at Deloitte Consulting. My work is project-based and focuses on the finance function within larger companies. I provide consultancy for various companies, optimising financial processes and procedures. As a result, my work days may be very different depending on what project I am working on. Sometimes I work at Deloitte Consulting, sometimes at the companies where I provide consultancy.”
